View Full Version : Gary Roach's boat?
Wondering

Just looking at the PWT AM pics, and wondering what Gary Roach is riding in?
I assume a Lund, but is this a new model, or prototype, or ???

I believe that is the new lund LE with a full wind shield. Backer, Good, Randash, Roach and a few others are running that boat this year.

I can speak from a weeks worth of experience while fishing with Gary. The ride is AWESOME and when the windshield is closed, its like being inside my living room with the windows open. You can hear the breeze but you cant feel it. I believe Gary is the only one that has this particular model right now. A full size cooler fits infront of the counsels and behind the front deck. You could probably put a picnic table up there!

There are 8 of them built this year for the sponsored pro's to test. May introduce as a retail model - who knows. They've been asking for that model for a long time.
Basically, it is an LE, with full windshield. I went to see Tom's when he got it, looks like a winner to me.
I thought it may look a little odd, but after moving the consoles ahead 9 inches a couple years back, the full windshield looks just right on that boat.

Which image is it in the set of photo's?
Was able to take a look at the boat and visit with Gary last weekend. It's a LE with a full windshield - great ride. Only drawback is there is only room for two behind the windshield, unless of course the third and fourth are your inlaws, then there is no drawback!

Nope, Gary's boat has a white headed transom mount trolling motor on it... That boat doesn't have one.
Here is a photo from the afternoon that shows the inside of the back end of Gary's boat:

Here's another picture that shows the front of Gary's boat (most of it anyway)...in the bottom right corner:

That is the main reason I have a Crestliner tournament 192 now. Lund LE too far back, SE too far ahead. Crestliner about right between LE & SE.

I wonder what it would be like trying to troll cranks with that boat?
I don't think I would like it.

Ok, I looked at all the pictures on the first post you put above. So....the questions is, where did you find these of Gary's boat? And how do I get to those? I only saw 2 pages in your original link.

I found them through the link you provided....thanks!
I bet the ride is nice, but the overall fishability doesn't look like it will be a huge appeal.

IMO it works great to troll cranks out of the LE.
You sit at the console and have normal visibility of your electronics.
You can use a tiller style kicker motor, for either forward or back trolling. Full access to all controls from the normal seating position.
You've got convenient access to several rod holders right from your seat. In other words, you don't have to stand up and attract a crowd every time there is a fish-on. Seems to be the norm these days, especially if your in a tourney boat, all eyes are on you, and ya can't advertise a fish catch without attracting a crowd.
What is this boat? Is that a Lund 20 ft tiller, with no markings?
Hmmm???

Not near the room I would like back there for cranks or anything else. That console is too far back IMHO. I'd be tripping over the seats.

I heard of a few of the guys taking a LE model and stripping out the console and other rigging in order to make it a tiller. I have no idea if this is one of them but could be.
I had the pleasure of pre-fishing with Tom Backer in Detroit earlier & it was nice to have the new windsheild on the cold mornings &/or during the rain that you usually get in the spring/fall. As far as fishability, like Burr stated, the LE allows you to basically have a control center which you can do all from. Able to have four + rods within reach, easily read your sonars, & have access to one of you live wells. I think this will be a positive addition to Lund Boats available options.

Does anyone know of a good pic of the whole boat would love to see the whole thing before you can judge it.
Yeah, it's hard telling. The pick below looks to be the inside of his boat. No wheel boat has a pedistal mounted where this one is, but then there is a cutout in the gunnel where the wheel boat throttle would be, I wouldn't think they would put a cutout on a tiller.
Kind of odd there are no decals with model or number on the boat, just thought maybe someone may know the angler. I can't see the motor size, but you wouldn't think it would be in a tourney if it didn't meet hull spec's - appears to be a 6 cylinder Opti.

The link Ristorapper gave is a pretty good pic of the LE-IFS.

The location of the cut out for what would normally be the wheel shows it is the SE version...but with no side console.
The engine .... I have my suspicions what HP it is ..but don't know for sure.
Well this is obviously not a production model. :)

Jon is using his 2004 Lund SE, bought last year, when it was used as a Power Tiller promotional boat, with a Merten-owned Opti 200 (last year). It's been for sale for a while now, w/o engine. Looks like a 150 onboard now?

Unlogged, you are right. It's an SE with the console torn out. He had to go through #### to get his boat approved by the PWT. Jon's a good stick and knows the system well. I expect him to improve in the top 10.

Lund has madea couple of Pro V 2010, which is a 20' tiller. One of my friends who works for Lund will be running one of them this year with a 150 HP Mercury Tiller on it with the power steering. I am looking forward to checking it out. I ran his 18' Explorer with a 90 Merc with the power steering in a tournament last year. The power steering is great to have. I will be going back to a tiller with power steering in the near future.
