Exciting finish in Team of the Year race as LEWT season comes to an end

The Western Basin Sportfishing Association (WBSA) held the final event of the 2006 Triton Boats Evinrude E TEC Lake Erie Walleye Trail (LEWT) in Lorain Saturday July 22nd. While different areas of the lake saw varied weather from very nice to isolated storms with hail and water spouts the fishing was on fire just about everywhere. The anglers arrived in the morning to find light rain falling and the donuts and coffee provided by West Marine.

The team of Wayne Jesionowski and Gary Zart both of Hinckley brought in the winning basket of 20.72 lbs. to capture first place for the event. The team trolled the east cup of the sandbar to catch their winning fish. Finishing in second was the father and son team of David Hartman of Columbus Grove and Travis Hartman of Bellevue with 17.86 lbs of fish. Finishing third was the team of Dale Hartford of Oregon and Dwayne Wallace of Toledo with 17.44 lbs. Both the second and third place teams also fished the sandbar area. Rounding out the money winners were Tom Sibert of Castalia and Thomas Sibert of Sandusky in fourth with 16.48lbs and in fifth Dan Gies of Huron and Matt Davis of Marion with 16.14 lbs. The fourth and fifth place teams both fished the Gull Shoal area. All the teams reported catching a lot of fish through out the day and talked of spoons, crankbaits and harnesses.

In the race for the Cranberry Creek Marina Big Fish Award team Hartman took top honors with a 6.9lb fish. In addition to the $420 that they received it also brought them a season ramp pass from Cranberry Creek Marina. The big fish was caught on a deep Tail Dancer ran 160 feet back behind the board.

The race for Team of the Year was also decided after the event on Saturday. In a very close race Hartman and Hartman came out on top to take the honor along with the pay out of $1040. Coming in second, just 2 points behind, was the father and son team of Sibert and Sibert which was worth $600. The win by Jesionowski and Zart propelled them into third place and a check for $400.
