I'm new to walleye fishing and there is not a lot of highly productive walleye water around here. I've read about weedlines and dropoff points but I was wondering if there is any effect of artificial "reefs" like the bass or crappie guys use. For instance in a long rocky shoreline without weeds,.if there were some anchored trees, would these be used by walleyes to ambush baits? Are all walleyes in schools or are there lone wolves that ambush like other preditors?
to say the least, walleyes will live in any type of area and water temp. there seems to be a distinction between stocked walleyes and natural walleyes. stocked walleyes will prefer weeds, wood(trees), or, in other words, whereever you might think a largemouth bass might live.
natural walleyes seem to prefer 'textbook' type stuff , such as rock reefs (natural or man made), bars and humps in mid-lake areas and hard sandy shoreline dropoffs. one thing i have grown to realize...walleyes have never read in-fisherman so sometimes they live where they are 'not supposed to be'. and then there is the great lakes bad boys. they are just as apt to be in the upper five feet of the water column over fifty feet of depth as they are on the bottem. they rarely relate to what we would call structure. although savvy walleye hunters on the big lakes might see mid-lake currents as structure to relate to.
