Tyee 1950 owners is a Yamaha high thrust 8HP kicker motor adequate for this size boat under most conditions? Thanks Ray

Not even close, I have a 15hp on my I/O 1950 and I never use the thing because it's hard to handle in most conditions. My 260hp V-8 will idle down slow enough to pull plugs and it handles great.

As a fellow Tyee 1950 owner, I'd love to see some more input from other Tyee owners.

i.e. O/B or I/O, v-6 or v-8, type of kicker, ITS or not, good or bad performance from kicker.

Well, I almost qualify to help - I don't have a 1950 but I do have an 1850 Tyee with the T8. A 1950 is about 250 lbs. heavier than and 1850. I DO think the T8 would be OK on a 1950. I have seen T8's on other boats bigger and heavier than mine. In one case I asked the owner (big fiberglass Skeeter) if he liked the T8 on his big boat. He said not only was he happy with it, but it ran circles around the 15 hp mercs he had traditionally ran on his boats. That's his opinion, not mine but he had been outfishing me pretty thoroughly so he got my respect!

On my boat, I have only had a couple times last summer where it was tough to turn the boat with the T8 due to heavy wind. It does turn if I open up the throttle to speed up. I have remote steering and throttle on mine so I would think this would be less of a problem with a T8 tiller.

I have a Yamaha 9.9 4-stroke hi-thrust on my 1950 Tyee and it's a great motor. It has a 3rd party lift on it which I'm replacing with a Panther lift.

The T8 is a motor you never hear anything bad about. But look into the cost of a 9.9 and lift.

I have a 20 foot lund fisherman and I have a 9.9 on it and it works fine.

Fishalot, I have a T8 on my 2025 IFS, very close to the weight of yours. It does a fine job. Either the 8 or 9.9 would be great. I have mine hooked up with a TR-1 Gold autopilot. It's truly a great package for a troller with no lift bracket needed. If you need any help, drop me an e-mail, I'm a Lund and Yamaha dealer. Tight lines, Bo #582

Hi Bo Do you have a brochure on the TR1 Gold Autopilot I live back in the hills & never heard of it. Thanks Ray

Don I could not steer my 1950 very well either when running my kicker but, I purchased a 4 blade prop with less pitch for my Merc 4-stroke 15 hp and it made a huge diffrence in my control at slow speeds.

I have a 2000. 1850 Tyee with 135 Opti and 15- 4stroke. They are tied to gather with an EZ steer. The 15 has remote start, throttle/shift and tilt. I also have a Sportpilot autopilot that can be driven by the Bottom Line NCC 6550 fishfinder/GPS. The entire package works great in manual mode or driven with the autopilot. I troll for salmon day in day out, 10 hours a day in winds up to 15 miles/hr. Works great.
