First off I'm back... new email so I got a new account. looking forward to visiting here alot once again...
My question is this... With some great locations for walleye here in NY has anybody ever considered a FLW walleye league region here?
I'm into the BFL for bass but after this year I'm changing directions some and would like to fish walleye events. Any info you guys got would be great! thanks

I asked Sonny the same thing this season and the straight answer was "probably not" or "definately not" - I can't remember. it was more related to logistics and the concern over how many would participate (my thoughts). Another consideration would be the venues, these are one day tourneys and we all know that Erie can be glass one day and sink a freighter the next. Ontario can do the same dpending on where you are.
I think you could draw people from a pretty big area (PA, OH, ONT and NY) if you held tourneys on water within 75 miles of Buffalo. I personally would sign up in a heart beat if there were one and help anyway I could...maybe, if 100 guys commited for 2008, they might give it more thought.
This would be the place to do it.

The MWC has been trying to get participants from that area for the last three years with little success. Why would the FLW start something?

Little success? Henderson was around 70 boats, year before Dunkirk was at least 50...so why...why do you hide behind a computer screen with your negativity, think I know why.

Iceman...

2 circuits here in NY, MWC and KAWA. MWC will be fishing 2 of 3 events of east division in NY, Henderson Harbor and the Lower Niagara River. The KAWA will have at least 3 events and possibly a championship. 2 events on Kinzua and 1 on Chautauqua. http://www.kinzua-walleye.com/

Let us not forget that the circuits that have been mentioned are team formats. I personally would love to see a pro-co format brought to the northeast. If it happens, count me in! It is difficult to assemble teams at times and I think the pro-co format could make out well in this part of the country. You have several pros that fish the national circuits who live in this part of the country, both team tournys and pro-co events. To fish from Erie all the way to Oneida, lots of water in between and lots of eyes.

The best way for you to get your Pro/Co wish...is to support the team format. Fish with your dad -- your brother -- your wife -- your best friend -- whatever. And have a great time!! If you're good you'll cash checks, but don't kid yourself -- competition is TOUGH in the MWC.

If New York tournaments continue to grow (and they are growing just not rocketing) the other formats will come out there. Team format always seems to lead the way geographically.

I wouldn't call 70 boats alot of success. They are drawing 190-220 for the central tourneys and turning people away at some. Also out of the 70 boats some are from the central fishing for the challenge. It doesn't make sense for the FLW to open a circuit out there when they aren't filling the tourneys in MN, WI, and MI. The FLW does a tremendous job, but until there is more tournament support in the east, I can't see them starting something out there. It takes alot of money and time to set these tourneys up. They need to pool their resources for the locales that will provide them with the max. number of entrants. Not saying there aren't great places to fish in the east, just that the tourney interest isn't there like the midwest.

Thanks for the replies and I hope everyone had a merry Xmas!. I myself was thinking about the places in eastern NY. Places that would make good walleye tournament locations are the following: Oneida lake Sacandaga, mohawk river, Canadarago lake, Champlain, Black lake, Saratoga lake. That makes 6 good challenging locations for walleye events. Notice I didn't include the big waters... Those are givens but weather can make it a tough call.
The FLW walleye league could probably pull off a NY division. I'm sure the numbers wouldn't be great though. If they run them like the BFL bass events, they got alot tied up in expenses when they show up. trailers, release boats, computer hookups, staffing etc... So in a nutshell it won't happen soon. when I see the BFL and stren series staff this year I'll bring it up... maybe lay down some ground work...
Some type of pro am deal would be nice but really hard to pull off. A team trail would work out best to start. So with that being said I might give it a try next year. 2008. I got alot of bass commitments this year but after that... gotta buy a scale and talk to some people... FYI I already got a website ready to go... It will be for the fishermen 100% payback + You'll hear it here first but not till next winter...
Thanks for the great input, I look forward to more in the future...

It will take more than a scale and a website to make a tournament circuit successful.

Good luck with that.

I think Kristine's point is very good, when other circuits see support for the MWC events they will follow. 'WHY' that posted above does not consider 70 boats a success, I disagree, it started at half that amount. This is not the midwest where tournaments have had years to grow and it is coming about thru a tough economy. Personally, I figured with lots of hard work and 5-7 years you would see 70 boats for Henderson, it happened in 3 years.

On another note, it takes much more than the great walleye waters to have a successful tournament it takes help and promotion from the whole community. The west end of NY also has good waters in Chautauqua and Kinzua.

I know you got to start slow... To be successful for me means just pulling it off... whether 10 or 100 show up... I've been doing that with bass events for years... I just want to put something out there for walleye fans in NY next year. Am I going to show up with a trailer, stage, computer scoring... nope... It will be me and my girlfriend... taking entries and checking boats... 6 or 7 events with a 2 day championship... Communities getting on board... Would be great but not a priority... I got a whole address book of potential helpers and sponsors... If they don't jump on fine...
If you want the spotlight and everything else.. Gas up and drive west...
Whatever happens it will be better than what is available to us now... which is nothing...
Thanks for all the input!!

I didn,t really want to get into this so I will keap it brief (I hope).

There are two more circuits here in the East that Gilligan forgot to mention.

Kinzua Outdoors is a charrity walleye circuit that donates all the proceeds to the handicapped kids! All of the events are on the Kinzua Reservoir.

The N.E.W.C. (New Eastern Walleye Circuit) is a premiere but affordable walleye circuit. Last year we ran events on Lake Erie, Oneida Lake, and Kinzua Reservoir.

At this time I am finalizing our 2007 schedule, and it looks like we will be going to Ohio in April, as well as possibly 2 events on Oneida Lake along with a couple other locations.

Exciting announcements will be coming soon.

I was part of the first NEWC Tournament on Oneida last year, and its a class act all the way. Very affordable and lots of fun. I hope there are 2 events on Oneida this year, its a great fishery with a nice central location.
