I have been out 20 miles in a 16 footer/40 hp many times, but often 5 or 6 miles is just fine. You must pay attention and understand the weather and how it works. If you can do that and have no surprises,a 16 footer is fun but never get a big head or the lake will eat you alive.. jim c

I fish out of a 17.5 Lund Pro-v. I was up there last weekend in 3-5 fotters and never worried for a second. Like everyone is saying, just pay attention to the weather, and take your time. Don't be in a hurry and press the situation should it get bad.

I just returned from Erie and took my 1660 Pro-V SE. Yes, the other advice is good and you must pay attention to the weather. Erie is unique in the sense that the wave pattern, if there is one, is really tough to figure. I'm not the world's most experienced boater, 5 years, but I am extremely cautious. I still got caught in some wind and had a wave crash the boat. Quite an eye opening experience! Make sure you have good navigational instruments and don't rely on looking for the pack of boats as fog and other things can come up. Also, the distances appear shorter than they actually are. Your pro-v is fine, just take your time and use your head. If it is too rough on the big lake, you can always find some side of an island or bay to enjoy your day. Have fun and use your head.
