Our sponsor for the Cabela's Masters Walleye Circuit is Farm & City Insurance Services. They can shop around for the best policy that fits your needs. And they have the clout to write "better" policies as they've gone to the insurance companies and laid the ground work for what tournament anglers want/need in insurance.

Their phone number is: (toll free)800 331 1520 or go to www.fcisanglerschoice.com.

They saved me just over $200 on my boat policy. ;-)

Mine was so easy with Anglers Advantage, that even a "Bass Fisherman" could do it.

Funny...even a "bass fisherman" could do it!!!

Things to keep in mind...

Do you require Great Lakes Coverage?
Do you want tackle coverage?
Have you taken a safety course?
And when it comes to the dollars and cents...make sure you are getting any discounts you are entitled!!!!

I recently did a little research on boat insurance, specifically for our tournament boat. Like a homebuilder told me today, we can build you a 'cheap' home if you would like. Boat insurance is the same, you get what you pay for in the long run. Saving money may not be worth the headaches.

Here's what I found. Companies like State Farm, American Family, Farmers and All State may love to insure your boat for recreation and the small tournament circuits, but check to make sure when you start paying over a $1000 for an entry fee and pro staff sponsorships(or guiding), what they think. There's a little bit of 'fine print' in some contracts that talk about exclusions for business related use. This also goes for the people who like to SAVE money by insuring your boat liability from your home insurance. Your home policy will definitely exclude any business pursuits. If there's a large claim, such as a co-angler injuring a back, the claims person will have the right to demand a copy of your tax return. If you write off fishing expenses, get an attorney. The games will begin. You've just found a bigger challenge than winning a fishing tournament in a 45 mph wind and your competitor has a stinger of big fish tied up to a tree.

Now for the Angler's Advantage. This is a great contract with some excellent options to purchase for specific needs. This contract is designed for the serious tournament angler or guide for a FAIR price. One concern, I believe that we should have at least $1 million in liability coverage. They wanted $400 to increase coverage from $500k to $1 million. In my personal opinion, $400 is cheap. With the lottery mentality in America, get covered.

One solution to the policy from Angler's Advantage, find out if your PERSONAL $1 million umbrella will take over if their $500k is exhausted. A few companies may allow this. It may take a commercial umbrella.

One more thing to think about, my wife would kill me if she knew how much money I have invested in equipment. Take digital pictures so you can remember what you have. All your rods, reels and tackle are considered personal effects and are generally insured from your home insurance for theft and fire, not the boat policy. Make sure you have the personal effects endorsement attached to your boat policy. This eliminates paying two deductibles and provides more perils (tipping the boat). If an average crank is $4- $5, I know I'm under insured at $10k!!!!

This is just one person's opinion and I have been wrong before. Don't shoot the messenger. I'm trying to help the majority, not every situation.

Another great reason to be a member of NPAA, is the discount (10%) from Angler's Advantage. They responded to an online quote within minutes, now that’s worth a few dollars also

There is one small draw back to Angler's Advantage though. They have a 250HP cap on their commercial policies. They won't insure boats with motors larger than 250HP for guide or tournament use. Other than that they are the best people you could ever want to work with. I've been with them for 7 years now, but will have to find another insurer since my new rig does not qualify for their program.

You have hit the nail on the head!!! I can attest to knowing what a fanatic is - I married one, and I do have a clue as to the dollars in his tackle collection, and I still buy him crankbaits if I think they are a "pretty" color. (of course, in groups of 6's in case they end up being the hot color) Where can you buy them for $4? I think I spend to much!!!LOL
Angler's Advantage is a great contract...I use it for our customers frequently. Ran across the problem with the $500k - 1Mil liability yesterday, one of the benefits of writing with an independent agency rather than direct is that we can offer the umbrella as well as the Angler's Advantage coverage to make it easier for the insured.
Angler's Advantage is the only company I know that offers a tournament fee reimbursement.
I have become a fanatic in getting proper coverage to tournament anglers and beyond. I will be at many tournaments this season educating anglers about the coverage they have and helping make sure they are properly covered!!

Jack,

Sorry about your luck. AA will hopefully realize that the market is changing. There's already a few 300's out there. Within a year or two, the crystal ball says there will be quite a few more. If AA doesn't change with the market, they will lose a bunch of policies. Maybe your agent can ask for an exception, until they have their rules changed.

May want to give a call to Progressive, have web site also. They do not consider tournement fishing commerical. If don't do any guiding, may work out for you.

Lynn you bring up some great points, I am insured right now under my home owners policy thru Michigan Millers. I called my agent to make sure that i was covered for tournament (fishing FLW Tour). His response was that if a claim came about we he would just say it was pleasure fishing. I said that is not good enough i have a buisness and some personal assets that i must protect. I told him to call the underwtiers at MM. He called me back and said he spoke with the man and he said if it was not my main source of income that I would be for sure covered! Now reading your post I'm thinking I should get that in writing or just cancel my policy and switch to anglers advantage, its about the same price anyways.

Chris,

Are you going to be at any of the PWT events (namely Mille Lacs) doing your seminar?

I would recommend Farm & City Insurance Services. Chris Higgins knows about our type of boats and the coverage we need. Give her a call at 800 331 1520. Very responsive and the follow-up is quick.

I would not recommend Progressive. I got a 15% increase after I had them for a year.:shame: I did not change my boat or my coverage, I have a perfect driving record, perfect credit and no claims.
 They are also a pain to call and you talk to a different person each time.

Thanks EJS!!!

There is a benefit for being with an independent agent, in that we are aware of what several companies are doing and as this market is changing what fits this year may not fit as well somewhere else next year. Insurance companies are stepping up and realizing that there are needs not being met by current policies for the different levels of anglers.

I welcome any calls 1-800-331-1520...

I will be at the PWT event in Mille Lacs, I don't know about doing any seminars. We have not sponsored at that level, but if you know someone that could hook me up with a seminar time I would be more than happy to put something on. I will be leaving the PWT tournament to attend the MWC Tournament and then returning to Mille Lacs for the Wave Wackers tournament. I won't be fishing in any of these tournaments, my husband is fishing both of them, so I will be a cheerleader!!!
