I started making my own jigs this year but I have question I need some help on. What size hooks do you use for your larger sized jigs? my jig mold recommends a 2/0 hook for a 3/8oz jig and 3/0 for a 1/2oz and a 4/0 for a 5/8oz.The 3/0,4/0 seem to be very big hooks I just thought that I would ask the guys who make there own jigs what they use any help on this topic will be a great deal of help thanks in advance.
The size of hook you use can be varied to the fish you are interested in and the differing conditions you may experience. I feel the recommended size on the mold is just a suggestion, and personally very seldom go with the huge sizes recommended as the weight increases. You will find that you can get by with a practical size, such as a no. 2, 1, or so, even in most large sizes, as long as the hook gap is not compromised by the molded head. Also, with a little work and a drill press, Dremel tool, etc, some neat mold modifications can be made to relocate the eye for balancing point, cleaning away mold material for smaller hook points, making the head more weedless, etc.
Another approach is to use a larger hook size, if needed, for lighter weights, i.e, no. 1 for 1/16 oz, etc. May require removal of mold material to accomodate the hook in the mold.
Have fun
