With being a Ohio boy and never fishing any river system like we will have in Moline, what type of fishing can I expect? Jigging, handlining, trolling, casting ....?
I am a co and don't want any spots, just presentation type so I won't be suprised.

Yes, yes, yes, and yes!
By the way, have you ever fished a wing dam before? ;)

Bass fished them a few times on the Ohio river with jigs and tubes.

like juls mentioned, live bait rigging, trolling, leadcore, handlining, pulling 3 ways are what i'm expecting for that tourney. alot depends on the water levels when we get there. i've never been there so i have to bring everything..... but still will be limited to only 2 days to pre-fish. that's what really puts the mind to work. still don't know if iowa is open or only Illinois waters... that's another aspect. waiting for the information packet...should be quite a learning experience. being from detroit, i hope handlining is the hot ticket.. but doubt it... wingdams have won alot of tourneys with live bait there.

I am sure iowa will be open. Do not think they will pull the slot.
Yep...I was told the river will be open on both sides, but that the slot will be in place. The slot is up to 20 inches, with one over 27 inches per angler, so that's two overs per boat.

Will willowcats be allowed? Right now you can't bring them into the state because bait transportation restrictions. Since nobody in IL sells them shouldn't they be banned?
Just talked to Sonny, who is on the road right now...he's in Moline doing what he does...and expects to be back in the office tomorrow afternoon.
He said, it would depend on what the Illinois state regulations are. He will check on it and get back to me when he finds out the correct answer. He said he has that paperwork back in the office, and would check on it tomorrow.
He offered, that anyone could go to the Illinois DNR website and probably find the right answer there too.
I'll check their site, to see what I find.
Juls
For those who are wondering, FLW just called me to verify if I am fishing. She told me that the entry forms will be in the mail early next week.

The willow cat issue is bigger than the IL DNR. It's part of the VHS policy on transporting live fish between restricted states.
You're correct, it is. BUT, the creators of the rules rushed the writing of it, and now we are dealing with their words.
The VHS is serious, but it doesn't effect all fish species, in all bodies of water. You need to look at where VHS originated and what bait is shipped from there. Willow Cats do not come from the Great Lakes. The only reason the Mississippi River is involved in this at all, is the fact that Wisconsin and Minnesota boarder a Great Lake, and the people who wrote the rules didn't take into account that the Mississippi River would be affected the way it has been, due to their poor rushed writings. The Mississippi River does not originate out of one of the Great Lakes, but it does border two states that border a Great Lake on the other side of those states, so that is the only reason the rules apply to the river too. Illinois also borders a Great Lake, and would also have the same written rules applied to them.
From what I understand too, if a person were to find a willow kitty dealer that can give a "certified clean" receipt, then the bait could be transported across lines.
So, you see, it's not so black and white. The writers left too much gray to sort through.
You asked for an answer, I'm just trying to find it for you...it's not a simple task. ;)
Juls
Edit: I can't find anything on the IDNR website saying one way or the other, or anything on the VHS virus on their site for that matter. Anyone else find happen to look and find any answers?
Thanks
fingers crossed

How far down will they call people to fish beyond the top 35?
For which state? If Michigan, then probably quite far, but the other states might not go too deep at all.

I agree with what you are saying about the flawed logic of the order. There's no question about that. That said it's still a law on the books right now and I'm not aware of a willowkitty dealer with certified bait.
Juls
I see that Rick is in 37. Are you guys going if you get the call?
From what I'm reading, I have to agree with you. I don't think it's going to be allowed. I don't see how it could be, with the way the law was written.
I haven't heard back from Sonny yet. I'm not even sure if he made it back to the office this afternoon.
I doubt I'll hear from him, and will call him on Monday when he's back at his desk. :)
Juls
Yes, we are going. I'll be doing the coverage for Walleye Central while the big guy is fishing it. See you there! :raisin:

I finished 38 in Michigan and got my call last night. I am not going, so I guess 39 might get the next call!

What is the format for the FLW, is it the League is for the not full time... or maybe the "little league" of fishermen and the Tour are for the sponsored "big guys" who can dedicate more time and finances to fishing. And if that is so why do we see so many tour fisherman fishing the league and discouraging the up and commers? If I were a league fisherman, would I really want to fish with tour fisherman who can afford to take a month off and fish the body of water for a tournament, when most little guys have to work 60 hours a week just to afford the gas to go to a tournament and can maybe take two days off before that tournament, if they're lucky? I know fishing is fishing, and competition is competition, I'm just curious to what the toughts are on the format?

The way I understand it is... the leagues were designed as a stepping stone for those who want to fish the tour in the future. Or, they want to gain the experience of a boater/co format, instead of a team format.
The pros that do enter these events do not spend any more time at the location than anyone else. Your thinking is flawed if you believe that they take a whole month off to prefish for a league event, or that most guys on the tour level have that kind of time and money. Some do, yes, but most don't.
The Leagues are not filling, and if the leagues are at a location where the tour is going to be fishing the next week, the FLW encourages the Pros who are already there prefishing for the tour event, to enter the league event too. Meaning, that in most cases, a pro who enters the league event would have only had a day or two of prefishing at the most, before he/she fishes that event.
I've never heard anyone complain at any of these events, that a big name was fishing against them. In fact, it's usually the opposite.
The tour level pros do not always do that well at the league events where the locals that enter have the advantage. The majority of entrants in the leagues are locals who can be out fishing that body of water every weekend, or after work during the week, so when it comes to "time on the water", it's the locals who have that edge.
If you let something like that stop you from entering a FLW League event, you've done yourself a favor... because, in your mind you were already beaten.

Did anyone receive their packets yet? I have not heard anything so far, so just curious...
I just spoke to one of the gals in the FLW office. She said if they do not get sent out by the end of today, that they will be going out by Monday or Tuesday at the latest.

Willow cats are NOT ALLOWED unless you buy them in IL!!! Have fun trying, no bait shops carry them in IL.And for people bringing them from WIS/MIN you will be fined for doing soif you are caught.DQ'd on tourney day if they are in your boat!
