My came with two front covers (bra) that makes warm ups much quicker. I also plug it in at work, you would not believe how well that block heater helps to keep the motor warm

Chris, a couple of thoughts, the Duramax has two thermostats, one will stay closed until the motor hits 185 degrees then the second one opens. Perhaps the first thermostat is not working properly. Also plug that baby in the block heater works wonders, also if you can leave your controls in the off position until you get in the cab and going down the road. Don't be afraid to let your dealer do his job by helping you out. Good luck take care. Don

I haven't had a Duramax but, my Topaz diesel could idle for an hour with it that cold without giving heat. Plug it in or start and drive. We had spent the evening for dinner at a friends house and it was below zero. I tried letting it idle for at least 45 minutes before leaving, no heat given. It would warm up fairly quickly when driven though. Technical reports say that letting any engine idle to warm up is about the worse thing you could do to it. The amount of wear on an engine that isn't up to operating temperature is very high. Start it, let it idle until you get the seat belts on, and then drive easy for a few minutes. Engine rebuilders LOVE the new remote starter setups.

here is my tow cents i have a 2001 duramax with 19000 miles on it it warms up to around 150 degrees when left idle for 10 or 15 minutes by letting a diesel idle there is absolutely nothing wrong with that you cause more damage at start up than you could ever do by letting it idle drive down the interstate and see how many big rigs are left idling it may hurt a ford or a dodge to idle but not a chevy. duramax power to the rescue and happy motoring

150 F at what temp was it at out-side
i am from east central saskatchewan and i know you can take it to your dealer to get a hi idle switch installed. there is no kit to wire in but a qu alified technician will hard wire the switch in for you. it will cost you one hours labor plus the cost of the switch and some shop supplies. the reason i say qualified tech is that it is wired direct to your power control module.
