View Full Version : Anchoring Ice Shelter
I am looking for suggestions on how to anchor an Otter II Magnum Ice shelter. No snow this year and lots of wind makes it tough keeping the shelter in place. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

There are a lot of different ways to anchor your fishhouse I'll list a few.
Drill 2 holes at the upwind corners and tie a rope to the center of a 16" 2X2 or heavy dowel rod. Force down the hole with a forked stick and pull crossways of the hole, then tie to house. These will freeze in because of really cold weather and will have to be chipped free to remove but work really well.
Another way is to buy or make regular ice house anchors which I've seen 2 types, a screw in type, and just a big spike with a loop of steel on the side which is just driven into the ice. Drive them or screw them in like tent stakes and anchor to them.
Hope this helps

Hi Jim,
I use mountain climbers "ice screws". They are more expensive than the common screws found at most tackle shops and are well worth it.
These are hollow inside and have a serated bottom to cut right through the ice, the out side has large groove like threads that will hold all day and night. I take a pair along on every outing just incase the wind decides to start blowing. Haven't found anything that can touch them.
Try R.E.I. or look for them in a good sport store that has climbing supplies.
I'd rather be fishing than sailing along the ice any day.
