In 2005 we could fish 5a, 6 and 7. Better give Sonny or Kevin a call before you assume things will be the same..... Kurt

If it's actually out of Winona, it will probably be 5A,6, & 7. Mississippi River tournament permits usually allow for 3 pools (1 above the starting pool and one below). 7 is a very short pool, so I would expect most boaters to stay on 6 or head north to 5A.
This should be an interesting event. Another year seems like a long time to wait.

Better learn how to fish rivers then, local tournament two weeks ago, 4 fish 28 lbs. I believe the weights for the last time the league was in Winona the top three had weights over 45 lbs, that's better than a three pound average. With no slot and the great fishery the weights will be there, it's up to the "pros" to find them.

And not to mention NO blow days.........
I grew up fishing Lake of the Woods and rarely did Gramps spend time in the Rainy river. When I moved to SE MN I was pretty intimidated by the Mighty Mississippi. Still am in certain conditions. But that's one of the reasons I love fishing. If it was easy then I'd take up some other sport, maybe under water basket weaving.
I was blown away in 2005 when so many anglers refused to show up in Winona. But I was impressed with how many non-MN guys made the cut. I think that speaks volumes to how many good river fishermen there are out there.
Not sure we can expect circuits to exist with this mentality.
Can't wait to see what the wind does in Cleveland. Lake of the Woods gave me plenty of wind experience but the FLW tends to take the anglers safety first so I'm sure we'll sit on the shore like we did on Day 2 at Devils this summer if the wind blows and that will bite. Won't have that problem on the Mississippi. Sounds like last years Championship at Oahe was a tad bumpy but at least they fished all 4 days.

I could see weather being a deciding factor, was there not a bunch of people griping about Green Bay last year and how rough it was.
Like you said tough to get a blow day on the river

Pauleye620 - so where would you like to see the League Championships held? Surely you've shared you thoughts with Kevin and Sonny, right?
There were certainly good baskets to be had in Winona in 2005. If you haven't spent your time reading and boning up on your river skills I don't think you can blame that on the FLW for chosing to go to a community that embraces tournament fishing.
Buy some willw cats, get a good anchor and head to the wing dams for some boring "dork rig" fishing. I think you'll be impressed by what you find at the end of your line.......
Good luck fishing! Kurt

No blow days but you can have some flooding. Look at the MWC Spring valley results. One fish per 50+boats!

Lots of options on where to go,just wood like to go somewhere with better fishing at that time,I dont care if its Green Bay,Saginaw Bay,bays de noc,Detroit river and Lake Erie combo would be a good one.Winona been there done that it just was not that FUN (except the bars)In 05 I got fish other ways then willow cats even though that was the most productive,I remember some bone head guy went to the hardware store and bought all they had (50 dozen or something stupid)they would not sell you any and they still had them in the store,If you were not one of the first 3 at the bait store you could not get them there either.

I feel the FLW picked a good locations. The community supports tournament fishing. Its a great section of the Mississippi river. It will take a 3+ lbs average for 15 fish to win which is good fishing. Yes its two river championships in a row, however, to play this tourney game in the Midwest it obvious you need to have strong river skills.
