This is in response to the questions and comments in Kolb's post.
I was the only knucklehead that I know of attempting to go back east on day 2. We went out in 4-6's with occasional 7's within the first 5 miles out. WHERE I WAS (I couldn't make it back to Ashtabula), off of Fairport, the waves were the biggest I have every seen, and I live on Lake Erie. Incredible stuff. This is not exaggerating. Please feel free to call my co-angler Phil to confirm. A thirteen foot wave went underneath my boat at around 11:30 while trolling, or I mean wind sailing. A couple of 12's and 11's; many, many, 8-10's, with six's in between them coming from the west and north breaking the troughing effect, except for the really big waves, they trough no matter what.
I support the FLW's decision making. We were all warned to use our heads and be safe. Every boater is equipped with the best equipment money can buy. Every boater made his own choice about where to fish. We all had the option to fish behind the breakwall. In addition, the waves weren't as bad to the west of Clev. Some guys, the guys still fishing, still caught'em.
I just had to let everybody know what I experienced out there off of Fairport. I hope I never, ever, experience those waves again.
P.S. Just as a side note, when I was a co-angler about four years ago I fished with Brad Davis. He asked me about a rumor that he heard with regards to Fairport having some sort of weather vortex system (not his exact words). A little younger, and less wise, I quickly vouched for this rumor not knowing if it were completely true; just more looking to sound like I knew what I was talking about.
Karma might have caught up with me yesterday.
