the article says, "recommended".
it also says that Al Garber will either accept or modify the recommendation in a few days. wait and see.

The DNR is testing the waters. Just like last year...throw out some numbers and go with the one that causes the least uproar.

What do you guys think?? I think the slot is great. When I go to Mille Lacs I'm trophy hunting anyway. Does it cut down on the number of trips I make a year, no way. I personally would like to see the upper end moved to one over 29, but personally a fish is gonna have to be over 32 for me to keep. At that point I hope I'm strong enough to release her and get the replica???

I couldn't agree more. I can't believe the number of people complaining about catching fish that are "too big". Are they crazy? If anything, the slot, and the average fish size makes me spend a lot more time on this lake. I would personally like to see a state-wide slot that would make everyone release fish between 20" and 29". If your freezer fishing, go somewhere else. Just one guys thought.

I would like to see the DNR actually do a biological study. Set a slot based on what is good for the lake not based on keeping the harvest under some court mandated number!

I agree too. Last year I made more trips to Mille Lacs because the fishing (for large avg fish) was so good. I can find small fish for meals closer to home.
And you will be strong enough to release that 32" walleye. I had a great feeling when I released a 31" walleye a couple years ago. And the replica looks great!

Big laker,

Any advise on where to get a good quality replica? Nice to hear about all those big 'eyes still swimming!! Thanks for letting others get a chance at that fish.

I got mine from Artistic Angler in Duluth. I did some searching and I can't find any information on them. Its possible they were sold/renamed. Throne Bros. (763.572.3787) might have some information because they were a dealer for them, and they have a lot of nice replicas made by Artistic Angler hanging on their walls. I know they did excellent work and had a 8 month backlog so its hard to imagine they went out of business.
The work done by FiberTech looks nice http://www.fibertechproductions.com/

Crossin,

I think Jack Nalor in Apple Valley does replicas too. I had inquired about that 30 I let go last summer. His price was amazing too, $245.00 I have not seen any of his work to verify though.

As far as the 32 goes, I'll just have to remember how good it felt to see the 30 swim off. Quite possibly my best moment ever on the water.

Well that might be the last straw for those poor resort owners. ..Why don't we make it 14 1/2 -15 and 1 over 32" and sell all the resorts to the tribe.

The fish are a renuable resource that our fine DNR seems to have no clue of how many are in the lake. The numbers don't add up. The regular old guys who like to go to Mille Lacs and the resorters are the ones being hosed. The guys on this message board who are a little bit more on the serious side of walleye fishing will still go there on a trophy hunt...we don't care but alot of people do.

I asked the same question (about where to have a replica made) last October. I got varied responses but by far and away the most praise was for Artistic Anglers. They (he) are doing a walleye for me right now. They have a horrible turn around (8-9 months)but their work has a great reputation. The number for Artistic Anglers is (800) 544-7466. He'll do the fish and deliver it from Duluth to the Twin Cities for a small extra fee.

With the new recommened slot size, it will drive some people away from the lakes. I guide on Mille Lacs and tell my clients that we will catch alot of fish but you won't keep many. The fishing has been great lately. This may drive some resorts bankrupt which will allow the Indians to by up more resorts and turn the lake into recreational lake not a fishing lake.

Really, I'm not terribly disappointed with the new proposal for Mille lacs. I do which however, that the Mn. Dnr would quit spending all our tax dollars trying to figure out which year class of eyes to abuse each year and finally, once and for all, reduce the limit to three eyes daily. 2 eyes 0-18 inches and one over 29. With this sort of a regulation, the fishery would maintain yet, it would help put some sort of normalcy back into the Mille lacs area. This is just my opinion but, I do feel strongly about it. The money spent on reasearch each and every year, on this fishery, is taking away from other fisheries throughout the state and starting to do more harm than good to the Mille lacs area! Nuff said.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY! WHO'S GOT IT AND,WHO WANTS IT! I THINK THAT THE COMMENTS ABOUT THE RESORTS ARE RIGHT ON THE MONEY. EVERYTHING IS GOING TO CHANGE BIG TIME WHEN THE INDIANS TAKE OVER THE LAKE! AFTER THE POOR WINTERS WE HAVE HAD,AND THE NEW REG'S AND WHAT IS TO COME... IT WONT BE LONG NOW.I GREW UP IN THE NORTH COUNTRY AND WATCHED THE CITY PEOPLE COME AND ABUSE THE RESOURSES FOR YEARS. THIS FISHING THING HAS GOTTEN SO BIG EVERYBODY WANTS TO CASH IN. INCLUDING YOUR GOVERNMENT.

The one thing that I have not seen mentioned is the bait or food situation in the lake. We caught a large number of "thin" looking 23to 27 inch fish this past fall, no full bellies compared to what we have seen over the last ten years. I confirmed this observation with several guides and resort owners from the lake. Dont get me wrong I think the big dogs are a blast, but every now and then you have to thin the herd to maintain a food supply. I agree with the earlier post cut the limit and open up the slot...
