View Full Version : Tourmament Horse Power Ratings
What is the reason for having 250 HP limits in most of the large Walleye Tournaments? Will they be increased? I recently have seen a 300 Verado on Ted Takasaki's new Lund.
I asked the FLW that question, and they said that the limit would probably never be raised above the 250 cap in any of their circuits.
It's a safety measure.

Seriously, does anyone really believe that as soon as FLW sponsor motors want to promote larger engines that the rules won't be changed?
Maybe they will and maybe they won't.
As it stands right now, today, the cap is 250.
If they were going to change the cap, they would have done it for the Bass guys who could have ran 300's last year.
Think about how fast bass boats go...mid 80's already. Seriously, do you really think safety is not an issue?
I'll bet the co anglers might have something to say about that.
Maybe they could change it to 300 for the walleye boats since walleye boats do not go as fast as bass boats. Who knows....it's up to them.
It won't be this year though, because the brochures have already been printed and mailed out.

I was considering entering the May Erie League tournament as a boater. Since I have an I/O on my 21' walkaround that has a 280 Hp engine, am I ineligible to use this boat?

Call the FLW and ask to speak to ( or better yet send them an email) Sonny... or ask any one of us here for his cell number... We ALL have it... lol
Yeah, what he said! :)
Call Sonny at 270-252-1591 (his office). If he's not in the office, leave a message, and he WILL get back to you.
The brochure specifically states a cap at 250hp for all "outboards". It says nothing of I/O's.
Only the FLW can give you the correct answer for your question.

What if I have 2 225 hp outboards on my boat? Can i enter then?
I wouldn't know. You would need to call Sonny and ask him that too.

With the size of the new boats coming out for, "Walleye Feishermen & Fisherwomen" that I have seen, alot of them are rated for 300 HP. I have also read in theese scripts that the boat you buy should have the maximum rated HP placed on it. I do not believe that with the size of the new walleye boats, and 300 HP engines, they could come close to the 80 MPH that the Bass boats can do.
Keith Kavajecz is running a 300 verado next year. so the limit is just on the flw?
varies by circuit

FLW has had the 250 restriction for some time, but it does not apply to the kingfish circuit from what I have seen on TV - probably could validate that off their website.
PWT has been unrestricted since the beginning is my understanding but KK ran a 275 when the max you could get out of tracker was a 250 and now I believe the limit is a 275 that you can order. Interesting that there's different treatment on the factory team/pro staff for that company...

NOPE - unless they changed the policy since 2005. I fished the 2005 April Lake Erie event in Port Clinton and was not able to fish the event in my boat at the time - 25 Contender powered with twin 200 HPDI Yamahas (boat rated for up to 500 HP).
I was fortunate enough to be able to use a dealer demo boat for the event - 23 Tournament Contender with a single Yamaha 250 4 stroke. The bummer was since I wasn't the registered owner of the boat and motor, I left a substantial amount of Yamaha Contingency $$$ on the table - but I knew that going into the event so no complaints. At the time I spoke to the FLW and someone from Yamaha prior to registering so I knew what I was getting myself into.

I wonder how Larry Lambert fished out of his +/- 27' boat?

>I wonder how Larry Lambert fished out of his +/- 27' boat?
Larry fished very well - finishing 9th in the tournament and also received the $1500 Yamaha Contingency $$ as the registered owner of the Yamaha motor on his boat.
Larry fished out of a 23 or 24 foot Hydrasports with a single 225 Yamaha 4 stroke which was within the rules.

I understand the safety issue but when is enough enough????? It wasn't long ago when I had a 225 and that was BIG now its a common motor.
I guess I don't understand why if the manufactors keep raising the limits then why doesn't the tournaments. Safety is alwaays a concern for everyone at least in my boat. If you don't feel comfortable running a 300 then don't buy it. There must be a lot of independantly wealthy people out there because I just heard of the first Ranger listed at 73K. HOW do you pay for that? I'm not knocking any tour but to keep the motor sponsors there why limit the Horsepower????? What is the rating for the BASS or FLW Bass tour??? The day I have to wear a motorcycle helmet to run my boat I'm done and the Bass side has done that for at least a couple of years. So, where is the safety issue??? What kind of message is that sending Co-anglers wanting an awesome fishing experience when the Pro hands him a motorcycle helmet?
I understand the business end of it and they are always improving themselves and getting bigger to be better then so should the tours.
Just my two cents.

Saw where Mercury already has a new 350 h.p Verado for 2008. Ted's 300 is already on the small side. :)
Have a good one.
