Recently bought some 6lb Vanish, planned to use the stuff as a leader on Lindy Rigs contected from there to FireLine. I've noticed that I can wrap the line between my hands and break it with relative ease, especially compared to 6# Trilene XL. What have everyone's experiences been with this new product? Thanks!

I have been using Vanish line for jigging this year. I have not had an problems with the line at all and have caught fish up to 9 lbs. already.
I fish the Detroit River, which has the most unforgiving snags.

Remember to have your knots real wet. Also use the knots that berkley recomends and you shouldn'thave any problems.Vanish is also heavier than regular mono so it does cast different and will sink faster.I have found that putting line on a spinning reel works best if I put the whole spool in water before putting it on the reel.

I just got some to try out. What knots do they recommend?

I used the Vanish 20 lb test for Saltwater wreck fishing and found the same thing you did---It breaks when tieing knots and frays more than mono---I have not had a problem w/ it when i have had fish on--

Uni, clinch and Palomar. Wet with mineral oil on a Qu_Tip to eliminate loose tying and friction. Spit hasn't made it with me. You need more lubrication.

Anybody wants mine they can have it.... Tried to do everything correctly, ie wetting of line before cinching, cinching knot slowly etc... The stuff cost me multiple cranks. It seemed to break when it even got near a zebra mussle. Switched back to 10# Trilene Big Game and cured the problem. I was hoping but for me it didn't work.

I have used the 8, 10 and 12lb vanish for leaders and have found this.
1. it is fairly invisible in all types of water
2. never tie a knot without lots of water. the uni-to-uni and trilene knot work best for me.
3. never pull on your knot unless water is on it. It will snap quite easily when dry.
4. It does fray and will get nicks in it when rubbing against structure. in the water there is no problem but if the line is dry, Snap!

For the most part, vanish works well in the water but not out. I will probably use up my 110 yd filler spools and then try another flouro line. Maybe real leader material :)

I agree totally with you!!

I used a scale and used a nice round stick, with no knots on either side to check the breaking strength of the line.

I was using trilene as a measuring point.

I found that vanish, broke much easier than trilene -- not at the ends - in the center.

I then checked several other brands of florocarbon - and found the same thing to be true. It is possible that the trilene is breaking at greater than rated, strength, and that the florocarbons are breaking at closer to rated strength.

I was curious to check the Stren Florocarbon. I only found some last week at the local sport market.

When I checked the Stren Florocarbon -- much to my suprise, I found that the breaking strength of their florocarbon, was very similar to the Trilene.

I picked up a couple spools and will them a try. I did use the Segur Leader material last year and was relatively pleased. I did however, lose one nice fish - due to a line break -- that didn't break at the knot. No problem with my drag either.

So, I will give the Stren Florocarbon a test on the MN opener and we will see what we will see.

No question that -- in the water -- the florocarbon is much less visable. I do feel that - when fishing clear lakess -- like Mille Lacs -- the florocarbon - does make quite a difference when fishing live bait jigs. If you are running cranks, or jigs -- I don't think that it is so important.

Take care

I used the 20lb vanish for dipseys and sliders salmon fishing last fall and it worked good, used the 12lb seaguar for leaders walleye fishing jigging and trolling,no problem, ran out of the 12lb seaguar jigging on detroit river this spring and bought the vanish 12lb.it worked good jigging but the knots are breaking using it trolling, when breaking the line on snags jigging the knots held fine.I will be going back to seaguar myself after results I have had with both.Good Luck...Bob

Used the stuff all winter and spring casting for striped bass in Lake Cumberland. I did do better with the 10lb vanish than mono but it it does not handle any scrapes you must keep checking the line. On the positive it does seem to sink faster so you could use a smaller jig and today it seemed that it trolls 2 to3 feet deeper than the same size mono.

Oh by the way, there is only one thing that breaks line and usually it has a bunch of complaints about the the maker it couldn't be the user.

I haven't used the vanish, but on Saturday I caught 6 walleyes on the bank of a river with 8lb. XT. One of my casts shot too far to my left. My jig got caught in an fallen dead tree. I pulled on the 1 and half inch limb 4 times. The limb broke, saved my jig, and after reading all these comments on vanish line I'm glad I was using the XT.

I caught a 21 pound Rainbow with Vanish. Was trolling with 14 lb Fireline using 12 lb Vanish as leader (connected with back-to-back Uni knot), tied to lure with Palomar knot. I fought the fish for several hours before finally boating it. Fireline held, Uni knot held, Vanish held, and the Palomar knot held. Needless to say, I'm a believer!

I use the stuff as leader material for a lot of applications. I haven't had any problems with it. I started using the mineral oil / Q-Tip trick that Ranger mentioned below and it works real good. I also use it for catfishing. I typically use the Big Game Solar as my main line and the Vanish as my leader. I have abused it good and not had any break-offs or significant problems. When it wery first came out (before knowing about the knot wetting business) I had a lot of trouble with it. I was using the 6# for smallmouth fishing and had a lot of break-offs at the knot. Knock wood I haven't noticed anything since.. Jeff
