Not lookin good for normal conditions at SV this year again. Allot of snow here in NE illinois with no major warmup in sight. Throw March rains & massive snow melt in the next few weeks and I see big problems down there. It should be interesting to watch over the next few weeks. Maybe there will be even less fish caught this year.

Was down in spring valley for the monthly meeting. I had the chance to check out ottawa pool and bartos.
Ottawa still high, but below the seawall at allen park. Fast moving, clarity at 4 inches or so. Lots of big ice flows from the fox working the far shoreline. There arent many places to hide water in ottawa, so the SR #### lets it out quite a bit.
Barto is still frozen and high. We got some good snow last night, with some rain the other day. The thaw will be coming, so its a wait and see kinda day.
Excited for Spring Valley

superdog,
My cup-half-full attitude differs from yours. No matter what the conditions, I am actually looking forward to fishing the MWC at Spring Valley again this year just like any other year and any other MWC tournament.
Also, I don't know how anyone can foresee "no major warmup in sight", or "March rains & massive snow melt in the next few weeks"
...perhaps your knowledge of the future could be better served for things other than predicting doom and gloom for the Illinois River.
If you are not willing to fish the prevailing conditions, then don't sign up....and whatever the conditions, fish will be caught and someone will win first place and a nice sized check.

I`m Not fishing the MWC but I have fished the IL river for 15 some odd years. All you have to do is follow the river stages and the weather. I dont think the IL will go under flood stage for the month of March. With the extended forcast, major snow in Indiana, and still 8" of snow on the ground in northern IL.,plus frozen ground. All rivers and creeks up already, spells for flood conditions on the IL. I dont think it will have the garbage that we went thru last year,(it was 4ft higher than it was last year twice this year already) but it will definatly be up and dirty. We have had the 5th largest snowfall season on record in Chicago. I dont want to paint a doom and gloom picture but a slam on Komo was not called for. Mark is a experenced IL. river fisherman and knows and follows the conditions. I hope everybody has a good and SAFE time on the river this spring.

John,
I believe MWC Angler's post was addressed to "superdog", not anyone else.

Sorry to come off negative to you Sunshine, I was just saying it was going to be interesting to watch the meltdown unfold.
By the way here's a prediction for you: Your going to win the tourney.

4 fish and everyone finishs 5th. Atleast everyone comes out with a great finish to put on their resume. :)
Plenty of salty attitudes from last year. It's no surprise. And with the current situation I don't think anyone is really being negative in regards to the conditions. Some are just being realistic.
I predict you finsh 10th or higher along with the rest of the field.

Common on. The river right now is 19 feet at La Salle. Last year for the March IWT the level as 18 and the best bite ever for some of us. The river will be in great shape for the MWC this year. Its a month away. A gradual snow melt will not create a flood.
MWC 2008 number 71.

It wont be the first time the river has been high for a MWC Ill River tourn. Last year was the worst I remember, but there have been lots of years that river was high and people still caught fish. The tougher the conditions the more the measure of ones angling abilities.
I am so tired of winter, I cant wait, Right now I would fish in just about anything.

It sounds like lots of guys are tired of winter! As soon as anyone learns to control the weather they should bottle that formula and sell it to millions of farmers, construction companies, outdoorsmen, Fishing Tournament Directors...you will make a fortune.
Good luck to all those entering the tourney. I wish all those who have entered the best of luck. The MWC at SV is almost like a rite of Spring.

This must have been a long cold winter. Why don't you guy's bend over and see if you still have anything down there. I havn't heard so much whining since my last trip to Miami.
I know for a fact the Spring Valley Boat Club will be high and dry with Waldo at the helm....enjoy.

Jayman. I guess the rest of us just needed more time on the water to figure out the pattern.

Do you remember these guys
1988- Kraft and Randash- 9.36 lb
1993- Pokorny and Bently- 12lb
The 4 teams that caught a fish last year deserve all of our respect, they beat the rest of us fair and square.

John, you know that river as well as anyone else. I just believe with last years conditions it was more of a crap shoot.
I'm just thankful I chose not to fish it.
This spring will surely be another "interesting" year.
