I was up there in "96" for the NAWA Tournament, mid-June. The fishing was excellent. I caught most of my fish working the channel edges. I concentrated on areas where a cut extended back into the flats off the edge of the channel. Spinners and crawlers were the ticket for me. The bigger fish (one 7 pounder and a couple of 4#s) for me came trolling just west of the harbor mouth. We went out the west harbor entrance and took a hard left. The fish were spread out anywhere from a half mile off the rip-rap to a mile or so west. Rattlin' Rogues on Fire Line worked best. I would mark a lot of fish deep, but had to keep the bait high to get bit.
Pat Foster won by casting shallow stickbaits near the warm water discharge. Had it all to himself and won easily. It is a good fishery and I would go back anytime.

I fish the river a lot, has big northerns and crappies, Try between bouys 13-18 I think working the edges like Doug says is real good also. Don't be afraid to fish the 4-6 ft of water when the wind blows, drifting lindy weights with a floating jig head and leech. There is a big tin shed within sight of the Bong bridge I believe bouy 15 is right in front of it fish that whole stretch toward arrow head park which is the WI. side I launch there, nice ramp.
Could tell you more about railroad bridge, boyscout camp is also good and there is an area called Pokegama, the whole river is good at most times, My dad always quit fishing it around June but it stays good for a long time, In front of Perkins is also good as they move to the Lake, Don't overlook the shallows, And don't forget the limit is only 2 per person unless it changed recently.

There are no walleyes in the St. Louis River. Lundman has caught them all. He gives them names and then releases them.
Fishing the St. Louis River is very simple. Look for the boats follow their drifts. Roughly follow this time table:
Opener to early June Bouy 77 to Hwy 23 Bridge
Early June to Late June Sprit Lake Near Whitsides Island &
Old Steel Plant Run In Main Channel
Mid June to July Just about anywhere from Sprit Lake
Lake Superior find the marked channel
fish the flats around it.
Water is very stained. Takle that wobbles, spins, flashes, floats or rattles work well. Minnows & Leeches early.......Leeches & crawlers as the season progresses. Cranks that are speed trolled used extensively and produce well.
After mid-July fishing slow a bit, but I walleyes are present.
