"In other news, Chris Gilman, who entered the day in 2nd place, just 1 pound out of the lead, was disqualified after having six fish in his livewell when he came in."

This is a quote from a press story on another website. Did the Co mis-count or did Chris? Did Chris forget it was five for the limit instead of six as has been the case many times over the years? Culling mistake? Very expensive move! Either way.

Gilman's day was going along just fine as weigh-ins drew closer. Then it got better, and then it got worse - a lot worse.

The Chisago City, Minn. pro who finished 2nd in last year's Angler of the Year standings, entered the day with a legitimate chance to make the cut. But that all changed when officials began checking to see if all of his fish were alive.

"I caught a 10-pounder at the end of the day and got so excited," he said. "I threw it in my livewell and forgot to throw out my other one. I had no idea but I had six fish in my livewell."

While the Ohio daily limit is six, FLW Tour rules mandate five fish is the maximum allowed in a livewell at any time during a tournament. On top of his catch for the day, which he estimated to be around 33 pounds, being disqualified, he missed earning a check by 1-03.

"It cost me probably 100 grand in the end," he said. "And of course the points and the Ranger Cup and the Toyota bonus and the rest of it. It's been a bad day. With the Angler of the Year title and making it to the championship, it's just a disaster. It's my mistake. Basically, what happened was I got excited in the heat of the moment.

"You can't even imagine (the frustration). You try so hard and there's so much preparation and a lot of it's money."

He said he and his co-angler never thought to double-check after they landed the 10-pounder.

"Obviously, we got all the lines in the boat and we're trying to catch another one and never even thought about it," he said. "If we would've, we'd have thrown the other out. I should've checked. Obviously, I was sure I had five or else I would have checked.

"It's just a disaster."

He is not the first to be hit by this type of thing. And will not be the last.Thats why we fish. Fun. But would he have won I would say no THE ROOKIE is on fire.

I know Chris personally and also some of his team. I can only amagin where he would be if this didn't happen to him. He had a sweet chance to win some serious cash.

I recall days when the Championship PWTers were in town and I know Mr. Gilman was here several times at least. Who cannot like this guy when he shoots you a smile a mile wide and those dimples shine through.

Put this behind you Chris, get back up on the horse and strive for the top again just like always. Peace!

If you want to get down to the nitty gritty he should have been dq the second he placed the 10lbr in the live well. Its 5 fish in the well. You have to cull a fish out before you put one in!

i have been in a bone head situation like this before , although on a smaller scale ,, my partner took the fish to the scale and we had a 9 or ten pound fish in the box... never weighed it for big fish,,, a grand or so on the line... i didnt remind him so i cant say much... didnt think i had to remind him... also in a small mouth tournament about 200 boats one time.. we braught 6 fish to the scale on accident the second day only 5 were allowed... had a great second day weight with an extra 3 lb fish in the box then the guy on stage asked if we had a big one to weigh.. my partner who talked me into this bass gig opens the box and pulls out our biggest fish maybe a litle over 4 lbs when we needed at least a 5 to have a shot... the tournament anouncer at that point took a peek and noticed we had 6 fish............ahhhhhhhh, lol ,oops go from a top ten to the bottom of the field... still comes down to both guys havta be sharp, but anyone who has fished plenty of tournaments it seems to happen to somone almost every week just not the same guy.. lol fun to be dumb.. or too smart for our own good , or whatever... makes for good bench fishing conversation with a cold beer for years to come... As far as Gillman... keep your chin up , you HAVE BEEN ON TOP, AND ARE STILL AND ANGLER NOT TO BE IGNORED!!!!!!! A HEAVY HITTER !!!!!!!
