How is the walleye fishing at Pickerel. I'm going there in late May to a cabin and wonder how the fishing is? What patterns work best then? Thanks for your help!

Magic, you will be in the middle of walleye paradise right at prime time. Pickeral is only one of many lakes full of walleye in NE S.D. Get a good map of the region and you'll see a few legendary waters right next door.....

Thanks Dutchman. Will I need to bring cranks or just jigs and live bait rigs or will anything work?
Never know :) I've not fished pickrel as much as some of the other lakes up there, but I'd be prepared for just about anything, from a deep plug bite to slip bobbers and everything in between. It'll help you target fish other than just walleyes that way, if the eyes aren't biting. Pickrel has some jumbo smallies in it, as does neighboring enemy swim lake (Swim is the best overall smallie lake in this part of SD IMO). Also, the panfish are pretty good in pickrel.

I have had some fun trips shore casting Pickerel Lake in the spring and fall with plugs and jigs.
A great little lake in some nice country, and the surounding lakes ain't too shabby either.
Be sure to swing up to Cottonwood Lake Resort and have some chow, very good food.
Say Howdy to Jeff Olson the operator, old friend of mine, a great guy.

Is that the main fisherie covered by the NE South Dakota Walleye Club?
Interesting, I didn't even know there was a NESD fishing club, any idea where I can find out about it?
Thanks,

Beautiful lake.. Nice campground and very protected from the wind. Try the rock pile just NE of the west side boat ramp with Jigs. Also, try the NW side with spinners. Or the strip just north of the East side bait shop/gas shop. Nice fish if the bite is on. Good luck! That area, Enemy Swim, Waubay, Pickerel, Roy, is a great area that is truly an experience to behold.
