So, I have fished the Illinois River with fair to good success at this time of the year...But, what techniques are a good plan for the Mississippi around LaCrosse, Wi. at this time through January...

since i never fished the Miss i,m not sure but here on the allegheny river thur out the winter its jig and minnow , hair jig and minnow or blades and spoons and lots of back trolling, on occasion we do use bottom bouncers and livebait

We fish at Lynxville thru the ice and use the usual jigs with plastic, bucktail or fantasy fur (although you may move a size lighter than usual with the lighter winter current) and sonars, and jigging spoons, and my favorites - jigging rapalas and the nils master jigging lures. Usually tip with a minnow and in the case of the jig rap's and nils I usually pinch off a minnow tail and add it to the treble on the belly of the lure. Have also seen it on the tail hook. Catch many more sauger than wallys but fun to pass the winter - you know! If you can get a boat launched verticle jigging works great from them too, but the hard water is the most stable platform one could hope to jig from. Good luck, Chuck
