First let me thank WC for having to ask this question. In addition to 2 other winning tickets at the Wallye Central Get Together, I won 4 Ugly Stick rods, CAL 1100 7'Med Action & 4 Shakespeare Tidewater 10la reels, these do not have a line counter but figure I can count the footage like the old days.
I am new to the planer board stuff and the best I can do after one year is at least know what questions to ask. I fish out of a 1900 Lund with 3 Fish-On pole holders on each side. Last year I bought 4 Okuma rods and reels from Den. He rigged me with the power line and backing.
I am not sure what set up to use with the new rods and reels, this includes the line. I could mix with the others (I fish with 2,3 and sometimes 4 in the boat), I could have them ready with alternate rigging so I do not have to change the Okumas?
Any help would be appreciated. Any other use of these rods and reels is also welcome. Den, if you are out there, I would like your ideas since you know what I got. With the long weekend, I will be in and out but will check back regularly.
Thanks again to Walleye Central and best of the holiday season. The boat is still in the garage, hoping for one more time but it does not look like it is going to happen (weather)but then it is not that long before I can put some of these ideas to work (Spring 03).

If you dont have a lead core set up yet, you could use the reels for leadcore. I use my non counting Okumas for this. Lead core changes colors ever 10 yards I think. Should work great with the setup you have.

Good luck!

That is a good idea. Then I will have to go to archieves to see when to use and under what conditions vs the power line. Thanks Reels, keep the ideas coming. I may end up doing combos and for sure learning more than I new before.

i would suggest you go out fishing with someone who is a troller. you will learn more in that one day to speed you up in what/how/where etc.
it's hard to cover many of the tips because alot play into where/what water/depth etc that your going to fish.
we have the top erie trollers here on this board! plus many other waters (i just know of the many erie ones)

I might suggest that you rig these four rods with monofilament line. I have a set of rods dedicated to mono, and a set dedicated to non-stretch superline.
The mono will give your lures a more even swimming action, and the superline will give it more of an erratic or "jerky" action which can make a big difference depending on the mood of the fish, and the wave conditions.

You don't give a lot of information about the type of fishing you do but going with a setup like this should work for about most any situation.

Good luck

Thanks for the replys and e mail. I would like to fish with someone who knows the trolling on Lake Erie. I am sure I would learn a lot.
For now I am leaning with doing 2 of the rods with power line or leadcore, this will give me 6 rods out when there are 3 in the boat. Then I will use the other 2 with mono, 15# non abrasive. The comment about the bait action makes sense and this would give an alternative.
Thanks again
Joe

When running leadcore you might as well attach it to Power Pro or Fireline. Then your whole length of line in the water would be no-stretch. This helps give you a better feel and you can see the rod tips vibrate to tell if the lures are running clean or fouled with weeds or debris. The Ugly Stiks are the perfect rods for Superlines too because of their limber tips.

Supertroller, thanks for staying with me on this question. I am going to the store in Dundee this weekend and am still trying to make decisions.
The post about the mono and movement of the bait, I thought had a lot of merit. I have thought of 2 of the rigs with all mono, 2 with mono and leadcore, now yours to consider. My other 4 rods are 50# Power line on Okuma's 8'lead core trolling, classic pro.
Can you or others help me with this: If I am reading Precison Trolling right, I need 100' of 10# mono + 90'leadcore +50'mono at 1mi per hr. to get down 17'. If I look at the 50/50 system I could troll same speed, use a 3oz clip on and get 28', without the leadcore. I can think of a few suttle differences in presentation but overall isn't the last a lot easier and still gives me other options?
I agree with your observation on my new rods, they are sensitive on the top, with the clear color.
I am going to stop here because I am starting to drive myself nuts. It has already been suggested that I troll with someone that knows what they are doing.

Thanks for the help
Joe

90 ft. of leadcore at 1 mpH is going to give you 15 to 18 ft. of depth. If you're pulling a crankbait bait behind it, add that depth. If it's a bladed harness subtract a ft. or two for the lift from the blade. It's sometimes confusing to mix core with snap weights. Until you're sure where things are running, one or the other is preferable. Things are more speed dependant with leadcore than weights. I suggested Fireline or Power Pro only because I like the sensitivity and lack of stretch to remain the same, all the way to the baits. I like Superlines but many other people are concerned with losing fish because of lack of stretch and they prefer Mono. I think with softer tips and lighter drag settings, I catch a higher percentage of my hookups than I loose from pulling hooks out due to horseing the fish after hooking them. I seldom loose fishand most of those are lightly hooked anyway. I never "set" a hook and only reel them in steadily. The weight of the fish and their own aggressiveness will do plenty to imbed the hooks in their mouths. If they want to run, the drag is set light enough to let them. It's a lot of persoanl preference. We catch a majority of our fish being 5 lbs. or bigger,,,, maybe smaller fish don't hit as hard and are not hooked as well as my experiences are for us. If you catch smaller fish, maybe Mono will give you better results.
