I was wondering if any one out there new how an avid fisherman could become a guide I have been fishing in Manitoba and Ontario for the past 34 years and would like to share my expiriences with others.

Contact your local DNR about the criteria and licenseing. I'm pretty sure that guiding (like in Michigan) will just be a State licensed deal versus the Coast Guard Licenseing for the Great Lakes. Usually the inland waters are licensed and controlled by each state, but can have federal laws that dictate some rules. Each state can be and often is different.

PS. The Federal Forestry Service has recently gotten their hands in it, to asses some fees for using federal lands while guiding on certain rivers or lands defined as Federal. This fee was written into the law some 100 years ago. But like the indian rights laws, has resurfaced to accrue fees for either river restoration or extra coffer money for the department.

Just re-read your thread and realized you said Ontario and Manitoba. That opens up a whole new batch of Canadian Crawlers:-).

I guess half of what I said will not apply to you in Canada. I'd still contact whatever province directors about your request.

I would suggest contacting a resort or two. If you guide for the right resort, you may get some perks.
1) Let the resort take care of booking your clients.
2) Let the resort help pay for any special licenses you may need.
3) Use the resorts bait, gas, lunch supplies, etc...
4) Clean the fish at the resort.
5) Might even get yourself a new boat or moter to borrow while guiding.
What do the resorts usually get out of the deal.
1) A small cut of the money brought in by your guiding for them.
2) If your good, repeat customers for years to come.
3) The convenience of having guides "on call" to book as needed.
4) The peace of mind knowing they have experienced people who know the area showing their guests a good time.
