RogerB.
We used to use salted minnows on the Brook Trout streams in the spring and summer. Would simply take a Zip-Loc bag to the baitshop with us. Have the dealer put the minnows directly in the bag without water. Pour, Zip and flip the Mortons Iodized salt all around in the bag with the kicking little rascles. Flatten and roll up bag. We've used minnows slated in this fasion, in the middle of summer, for up to 4 weeks. Its best to refrigerate them after a days use, but not really neccessary if stored in a cool place.

I talked to my friend who is a bait dealer and asked him for Golden Shiners for our July vacation to Lac Seul and he can only get them in the winter. I read something on some posts around july or Aug. about putting minnows in 20 muleteam borax. Ive salted fathead minnows before and the eyes burn out and they turn black.

I`ve been salting minnows for 15 plus years and I always use a ice cream bucket and a bag of canning salt found at any grosery store simply try to get the bait some what dry and add salt as you put the bait in then I store them in the ref. and drain the water and juises out when needed we use this for canada every year just keep them cold and they last rof weeks. Use packaged minnows from Magic products.I buy a box at a time. The minnows also come in 3 sizes.I have been using them for 10 years & would never go to a bait store again except for perch minnows. For bass or walleye how many minnows do you use for 10 walleye.I leave them in my bass boat year round, they never go bad & there is no smell.

You might look up their web site.We do some work for them so I can buy direct. If you can't find any let me know & I can get you some. The cost is more than regular minnows but like I said how many do you use in a day. They last forever.I went ice fishing a few days ago & used these packaged waxworms & I only used 2 & caught 50 fish.Store bought waxworms most times come off even when a minnow bites them.

Roger B- I'm guesing you want to know some salting techniques? More than one method prevails. Here's a couple I learned from this forum in years gone by.

Posted by Marc on May 27,1999.-- I use a 5 quart ice cream bucket, one gallon of water and 1 1/2 cups "canning salt"(IMPORTANT)
When returning from a local trip I scoop out the minnows and put them in the brine. Remove after a hour, spread on newspaper to absorb some of the excess water and I store them in old plastic butter containers and keep in the freezer until the trip and then just leave in the boat.
Posted by Tom on January 25,2000.-- I salt them. Salt is a loose term and you'll see why.
We catch Lake Erie Shiners or Emerald Shiners, same thing. Let them die. Once they stop jumping put iodized salt on them. This will draw more water out of them. I put them on clean newsprint for this. After 20 minutes I'll sprinkle sugar on them. The sugar is a scent and puts a seal on the minnow. It turns liquid and then forms a seal on the minnow. Freeze them now in small margarinne containers. I use them just like this but a friend will put a little salt on them while thawing. The yellow perch sometimes like them better than fresh.

Personally, if I am in a hurry, I just use Marc's recipe until they die and then put them in ziplocks without doing the newspaper thing. I have used both of the methods above with success.
