How big (what size and what kind) of a flasher do you guys use when using a dropper for panfish?

Adam.

I only use flashers for crappies and perch. My two favorite ways to fish a dropper is below the smallest swedish pimple (Silver). I tie a 6" flourocarbon dropper on and attach either a genz worm or a plain #6 hook.

If I am using minnows below the dropper I use a plain hook. If I am using wax worms I use the genz worm.

The same Swedish Pimple with a dropper and plain hook works good for walleye, although it is not my favorite way to fish. It has its days.

These techiniques are especially effective on days when you need something to bring them in, or during the mid-day period. Scott Steil

Depending on the day, lake and water clarity, as well as type of fish being targeted; I use several different ones.
For fish that like to chase cisco, I use ordinary red and white dare devils. I take off the hook, and put on a ring, and tie it about 4 inches above my baited hook or small jig.

For perch and the like I will typically use a small spinner, or a castmaster, or a swedish pimple.

For Walleye, I use the same as for perch, except a bit larger.

The one thing that I found to be fairly important with the use of flashers on a drop line is to not put the flasher too far above the hook. If it is too far above the hook I believe that it isn't as effective - and there is a consistent problem with the line tangling.
The 2nd thing that I do - when using a flasher, is to use at least 10 lb stiff mono line between the flasher and the hook. Then, when the line is worked, and the flasher tumbles, the hook stays out horizontal from the main line, and doesn't tangle with the main line. If a very light limp line is used that is much longer than about 2 or 3 inches, the hook will tumble upward and tangle with the main line.

If in doubt, I put a flasher on nearly all of my winter lines - irrespective of what species of fish that I am hunting. It seems that the extra flash - of a small or medium flasher, is just enough to bring in all fish, and target their curiosity.

Take care

Thanks, that's very close to what I do. Just wondering because I sometimes use a larger Swedish Pimple or a silver jigging Rapala, I see some of these old timers out on the ice destroying the panfish... these old timers use a handmade flasher about 5" X 1.5" wide. They make them by hand and then polish them to where they'd blind you. They have em' rigged up on a slip-bobber, move em' a bit and then just watch the bobber twitch and set the hook. I thought maybe this was a common practice with such a large flasher for panfish.

I'm dying to try it, you need thin stainless or something, nothing heavy, highly polished.

Thank you again, Adam.
