: Sonars at high Speed

At what speed can you run your rig before the Fishfinder doesn't read bottom, or mark fish? And where is your transducer placed?

Skimmer transducers mounted on the keel will read at 70mph, if they are in contact with the water.

Bronze thru hulls (the ones you drill a big hole in the bottom of your boat to install) propperly placed will read at WOT as well on the big boats. Again so long as they are in contact with the water.

Both for my personal experience.

More convenient placement often means less high speed performance.

Hope this helps, and good luck.

Good question! I have a X-75 on the dash of my Lund and lose readings over 35 mph. I've tried different transducer angles and slight repositioning, but nothing seems to help! I also have the locator on manual mode with the settings set as discussed in prior posts. Any ideas?

Thanks.
Dave.

About 30 Mph On My Tracker185 I'm going to try to adjust it This Spring T185

Marble Eyes,

I can always read bottom on my Genetron (50 GPS), narrow beam, gain turned all the way down.

As for finding fish, it depends on how much clutter I want to look through. I find the best way to read on my graph at speed is to get the boat moving as fast as possible with the trasducer planted in the water. This usually means playing with the throttle a little, but 18-20 GPS or less seems to be ideal. If I am in a big hurry I will go faster and if I am scouting I will go slower. Plowing water seems to work great, but it is tough driving.

I will consider a glass boat on my next purchase because there is less rivet interference and you can mount the ducer in more effective spots for high speed scouting. That is the only reason I would consider moving away from a Lund.

Good luck,

you all have to simply do some big repositioning of your transducers. Just about any sonar will read at high speed. The bottom of the ducer must be 1/8-1/4" from bottom of boat, away from air bubbles and "weird" angles in the transom. My Lund-42mph, My ranger bass 68mph, bingo.

I can run WOT (48MPH) in my Lund 1900 and never loose the bottom with my PinPoint 7520's. I think most all locators should if the transducers are positioned properly. Some units work better if you adjust the options or turn off certain features so you are looking more at "raw" data.

MexicoNM-I had the boat out on the Detroit River and Lake Erie this last Tuesday. I set the sonar (Genetron)as you suggested, and Presto. There was the bottom. Both on wide and narrow Beam. Narrow was more defined, but both read at 50+ mph.

Thanks.

Good thing I didn't jump the Boat Rigger too bad before I realized it was Operator error. :)

Glad to see it worked out.

Have you been able to play with the unit?

If you have any other questions or want any tips, let me know.
