What do you guys spray on your rod eyes so they don't freeze up when using regular poles in freezing conditions.

Thanks, Adam.

I use a product called Reel Magic. It doesn't help all that much for icing but it does help keep things slick sliding through the guides. Also helps retard memory on your line.

I use a product called DynaGlide. IMHO, it works a little better than other stuff that I have tried. Reality is that when it is really cold out, the applications will forestall guide icing, but it will eventually occur. I have also used Reel Magic by Blakemore, and it is good stuff also. One thing that helps is to aplly it to your guides before you fish. To minimize waste and mess, I many times will spray a little D-Glide, or Reel Magic in a small cup and apply it to the guides with a Q-tip. Here is a list of other stuff that people use, I have tried a few of these, but not all of them.
-WD40
-Vaseline
-Crisco
-Silicone Spray
-Stanley's Ice Off

Another thing that will help is once the guides start to freeze, reapply when necessary.

I have used vaseline for a number of years. It needs to be reapplied once in a while but I've never noticed any adverse affects due to scent or anything. For ice fishing, I often keep my minnows in a thermos jug with a screw off top. The insulation helps keep the water from freezing on those really cold days. I always put a coating of vaseline around the threads of the jug and the top and have never had a freeze up where I can't get the top off.

If your eyes are freezing up, they are two small, only buy rods with big eyelets, they dont look as nice, but sounds like you falling for marketing f an ineffective ice rod-appearance, not function. I wonder how many walleyes don't like vasaline or crisco on their food?

Yea, and I wonder how many fishermen reel their bait/jig/whatever all the way up to the eye.

I fish alot in sub zero conditions river fishing mostly

the rods i have made for this all have silocone carbide guides for some reason they don't ice up as much one other thing to note is that the size of the guide dose not make a differance even on big guides there is still ice even though the guide is not frozen shut

the rods i use rarely pose a problem in 20 degrees colder than that it gets ify

i don't agree with the big guide theroy it inhibbits sensitivity too much i would rather pick some ice off once in a while

When I get ice on my rod tip I just put the tip or first two eyes in the water and melt the ice, then pop the excess water off the tip and go back to fishing.

If your not paying that much attention to begin with so that you reel your lure through the first eye, then nothing will really matter for you.

I am mainly refering to the rod tip "eye". If it's one of those tiny ones that many of the high priced rods have, the water from the line will freeze it up faster whether your jigging or sitting
