Anyone have thought on lures for northerns in Canada. Fishing in wild rice,Mepps and others spinners gather too much salad.

Johnson Silver Minnows will probably work well for you.

You don't say how deep or how much "junk" you are in....but the top
lures for our group has been an "imp" size dardevle type lure in white with 5 red diamonds and also the orange with black dots....
in Ontario.

You could substitute weedless hooks for the original hooks. I know that there are weedless treble hooks available. They have a fine wire guard to each hook. They work for a while but get banged up by use and the fish. Also I believe there is a lure called a "Fish Trap". It is a spoon-in different sizes- that has a treble hook that slides along a track. Two of the hook points recess into separate dimples or hoods on top the the spoon. The bottom hook point is protected by a wire guard that attaches behind the barb. When the fish strikes, the wire guard is released and the entire hook is available for hooking. Fish traps have been arround for many many years and they do work. Like many other devices, some trip too easily, some don't trip easily enough. Cabela's should have them.

By the way, my then 9 year old nephew hooked and landed a 9 pound northern off the camp dock using a Fish Trap.

Johnson's Silver minnow with "meat" is great in weeds or not. Shad raps or something with rattle works well. Any jig with minnow or meat. Some lakes silver flash is good, in others brass or gold is better. 5 of diamonds in imp size is Ok.

I fish a couple of weedy lakes here in Colorado for pike. Try the largeest versions of the Sluggo. It can be rigged weedless and comes in 6 and 9 inch versions.

Try the angle style spinner baits like the bass guys use( tandems ? ) or a cisco on a leader with a weedless hook thru the lips with no weight.

Most definatly Johnsons Silver Minnow with a white double tail twister tail. Silver, Gold, and Black all have worked awsome for me in past trips to Ontario.

Don`t forget the largest size ( can`t remember the exact) Rapala Spoon. Looks about like a Silver Minnow but a different action. Great colors, the black tipped with a black 6" or 8" worm plain kicks a$$! Hope this helps- Bob WC#253.

You might try the "old" johnson silver minnow. I always put a trailer of some type on it and it works well for me. Very weedless and pike just love 'em. They come in different sizes and colors too.

If you have a couple feet of clean water before the weeds start, get the 7" floating Rapalas Silver and Black and the Rainbow colors are deadly. If you dont have enough clean water to reel them in, twich them like a top water just under the surface.

A Moss Boss brought in slow is a fun topwater spoon, but it's not the best hooker. Fishes well over and in thick stuff.

You might want to check out Salmo lures. They have an awesome selection of lures. Pay close attention to Salmo's "JACK". This is a jerk bait that can be "deadly", especially fished over cabbage or in shallow rice beds. They've simply got some of the finest lures available! Check it out!

Johnsons Silver Minnow with either a pork rind trailer or twisty tail. Can't beat them.

I switch out the trebles on Daredevles and Mepps for large single hooks with weedguards. I tie the weedguards myself using a heavy monofilament "loop" style and kevlar thread. I then seal with superglue. These hold up as long as the lure. It's a lot easier releasing bunches of small to medium pike with the single hook (I also mash down the barbs). The larger Red Eye spoons have also been a killer for me. Finally, large (3/4 oz) spinner baits with tandem spinners + plastic tails come through the cabbage fairly freely and are effective
