I've read lots of posts regarding the 4.6 liter Ford v-8 complaining about the towing problems or lack of power. I bought a 2001 GMC Sierra with a 4.8 liter v-8 and was wondering if I would have the same problems?
Here are the comparisons I got from Edmunds.com
Ford GMC
4.6 ltr 4.8 ltr
231Hp 270hp
Does anyone know if I will have the same problems towing a Pro-V 1800 or something similar as those who posted about the Ford? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
HeavyC
The 4.8 GM engine has 270 HP at 5200 RPM and 285 ft lbs torque at 4000 RPM. Spring will soon be here!!

I think the GMC would be fine for most boats including the Pro V. Not sure about anything heavier. The Ford isn't really a fair comparison. That motor is more like a 6 cylinder than anything.
I don't think the GMC has the power to tow a Pro-V but neither does the Ford.
Good luck,

The differences between the 4.8 and the 5.3 in the chevy are pretty minimal. There is a much greater difference in the ford between the 4.6 and the 5.4.
My only experience is a friend who has the 4.8 and pulls a 23ft searay without any troubles. I would not think you should have any problems pulling a prov

you might be a bit of wanting if you have a 3.08/3.24 rear axle (doubt you can even get 3.08) if you bought it with a tow package you have anywhere from 3.42,3.73,4.10 rear end ratio.....not a problem with the weight you want to tow with any of those rear ratios. your truck should be rated for at least 5500lbs.

Not sure what the ratio on the back end is, but I know the 4.8 is rated for 9000lbs. Not sure how or why but that is what I've read a number of times.
