Time To Troll

Spooling up with some new Power Pro. The benefits of the hi vis yellow are obvious but is there any evidence of it spooking fish?

I use the moss green but my eyes are still pretty good to see it. You will hear many peolpe here say that the hi visibility yellow does not scare the fish. I like the green though, confidence thing I guess. I like this line more every time I use it. I mainly cast jigs with it and the sensitivity and behavior of this line on a spinning reel is fantastic. It needs a little getting used to at first, set your drag lighter until you do and try not to set the hook to hard. It really excells when you get a strike way out at the end of a cast and also in windy conditions. It also allows you to rip your jig out of a snag more times than not. I like the lowest diameter they make 8/2, I think. It is my lightening in a bottle when matched with a high quality jigging rod. :7
I have been using the hi-vis powerpro since it came out on a couple of rods for different things, and i cant see any difference in the catch rate, but that is just me too. i have used it for eyes in canada, crappies in ohio, and even muskie. but i havent tried for steelhead in the streams yet(maybe this spring), i do prefere clear line for them, but with the new 1 pound diameter line of power pro, it should look like a spiderweb strand, so who knows. good luck and good fishin.

Den the new Power Pro 8/1 is thin as frog hair, and just as tough to see.
I am fishing the 8/1 green on some supper clear water through the ice this winter, the fish do not seam to be effected in the least by the line color.
The lack of line fray has really impressed me as does the strength and lack of icing. Bite detection is super, ya can feel a frog fart in the wind at 30 yards.

I've never noticed any difference in line color either Den, and I guess I wonder, if the fish can see the line, what do they think it is? There are all kinds of things floating around in their world and I just don't think they would be spooked by line if they think they are going to get something to eat???
Just my opinion,

Hey BE,
Where are you finding the 8/1 line? Cabelas shows it as 8/2.

Go to the Power Pro web site and then hit on products, It is listed there.
www.powerpro.com
I think you can find your local retails from their site too?
The 2 new sizes of Power Pro are pretty new, many places may not have it in stock yet.

Thanks, I will check it out. At a 1 lb. diameter, I might need glasses yet...but then again so will the fish ;-)
i will have it in the shop as soon as it arrives there. both colors. good luck and good fishin.

Ya, it is tough to see, especially at night. You definitely need to keep the loops big and your fingers in the loops, once you loose it, it's a do-over pretty darn fast. ;)

After further investigation (actually looking at my Power Pro spool :) ) I have figured out that I am using 8/1 line not 8/2. I bought it through cabelas and they advertise it as 8/2 but in all reality it is 8/1. No wonder I am getting some break offs on some sharp rocks ;) . I think that I am going to move up to the 10/2 or even the 15/4 when fishing in this rip rap. Sure did like the feel of that 8/1 though. Maybe I will still use it in a little less structure type area. I noticed at the Power Pro website that it states it does not carry/absorb water like mono. This would make it a great choice for cold weather fishing huh?

Question for you thin-line Powerpro users: Do you use mono leaders or ties baits directly to the Powerpro. My perceived need to use a leader has kept me from using this stuff for other than trolling applications. Thoughts?

Works well in the cold WAeyes. I was ice fishing out in the open last night in -30 something wind chills, if that is cold to you?
You do get ice beads but they pop off with a snap of the rod. Because it is so thin and slippery your guides and reel bail line roller will not ice up nearly as bad. For most of my ice fishing needs I do not think I need any heaver line then that 8/1, it is plenty tough.
Another great line is the new Berkley Iron Silk. Low stretch and spools well in the cold, it is hard to beat, really like that stuff too.

I tie directly to a tiny duo lock snap and then attach my lure. It casts a mile and has no memory or stretch. Just set your drag a little lighter till you get used to it and no need to set the hook like a Tournament Bass Fisherman. This line is outstanding for jig fishing but the very thin stuff is susceptable to abrasion in heavy cover, but then again, what 1 lb. diameter line wouldn't be?
