Only when you run out of the real thing! LOL
Interesting question. A few years ago I fished a PWT event on Devils Lake and the Pro used Power worms and I used the Real Thing. Not only did he catch three fish to my one he also snagged a lot less. I must say that I was impressed and I do use them a lot more now than I used to.

I use them when the panfish and trash fish keep attacking my spinners. Seems to keep them off.

I started using power worms about two years ago and use them most of the time now.I have found I need to have them moving.I use them with rigs, jigs, and spinners.

I want to thank you for this question. I asked it with different wording a while back. I've also asked it of people I know that fish alot. My wording has been al wrong and because of the answers I got, I only tried it half heartadly once. After reading this I will try it more this year.

I particularly like them when the cobs and perch are stealing my bait.

You know, I have thought about this a lot, too.
I know fishing pros that do it and some that hate it.
I was at a fishing camp with a guy that was their educator and general guide. He was darn good at his job and a very knowledgable and talented user of bottom bouncers with spinner rigs on them.
The camp ran low on crawlers because a shipment had not come in and wanted what was left of their supply for their customers. So, this pro decided to use power worms and their peers for the day. My wife and I, in our own bought caught our average number of fish (like 40 to 50 a day) fishing spots he had shown us in the past. He fished those same spots and caught ZERO fish.
Every since then, I have been afraid to try the power work thing.
Maybe I will give it a try this summer based on the prior postings here.

Thanks for the replys. I fish Winnebago which is full of sheeps and I was hoping to find a way to lessen my encounters with those cute little things. If I spend to much time trying then I guess its back to cranks.

I use them occasionally. I've caught a few decent (5lb.) walleye on them and even a laketrout!
I like to use them now and then...the 'natural' coloured power worm seems to stand out in stained water. I always like to try artificials when my buddies are using live bait and only switch up when the live bait outcatches.
Try 'em!

We were on a Canadian fly-in and running low on natural baits so I started using 7" Power Worms on a harness with #7 White Blade and out produced my comrades. Tried the same setup on a MI Lake and had lots of action. Caught some nice Kings using 4" white power grubs behind an 8" dodger. The salmon chew them up much faster than eyes so went back to flies. Does anybody know what happened to the four inch version? It is no longer in any of the catalogs. I wanted to try using them in flooded timber hooked weedless. The six inch version is to big for that task?

I'm with eyeman on this one, we used them on when the ##### panfish are just tearing up our real crawlers. I also caught my biggest eye on a power crawler, she weighed 11 3/4lbs, I released the ole girl back into Gull lake:D

do you notice a reduced bite at all then????? have you ever put on a fake crawler and then put just a hunk of real crawler on one of the hooks for scent?????
