View Full Version : New Rip Shads
There were several posts on the new Rip Shad last week. Several of you mentioned where they were currently available. I stopped at Cabelas this week, and they didn't seem to know anything about them. I called their customer service, and they said that they wouldn't have any until late Feb or early March, yet some of you indicated that some places have already had them in.
I'm curious, how many of you have actually seen them in stores?
I received some in the mail today that I ordered from Den's in Huron, can't wait to get on the river and try them, they look sweet!!!!

They are the exact same size as a #5 shad rap.
FROGMAN

They are about the size of a #5. The new Rip Shad will get to about 14' - 16' if I recall correctly. That figure was for 10# mono. I played with them this fall on the Saginaw river, but was using Fireline. I had no problem bumping bottom with them in 12' to 14' of water.

Galyan's has rip shads now. They will be in short supply all spring.
The Galyan's in Schaunburg had a good selection but not all the colors.I only picked up a couple.I still feel the sting from all the Tail Dancers I bought. Can some one tell us what kind if action these baits have? Do they have that wide, searching action like the Deep Little Ripper or a more subtle wobble like a Shad Rap or Wally Diver? Are they hard to keep in tune and fast will they run?

I had the opportuity to fish them last fall on Erie. While they did not have the horizontal hunt of the Reef Runner, they were much more active than Shad Raps, and went much deeper (Max out at 16" with 180' of 10# XT). They were not hard to tune, and Mark Brumbaugh told me he'd run them at up to 5 mph without problems.
I know it sounds like a commercial, but hey you asked and these are the facts.

I'll put them though their paces this May after the jig bite .. that bill looks to be a good stump jumper, easier to tune & with that speed they should be a sUMo killer ;)

Tews in Oshkosh got a few more in.
After closely examining the RipShads I bought, about two dozen,I noticed that most have imperfections in the body, mostly in the rear portion.I hope this baits weren't sloppily produced and rushed to market with other flaws.I don't care what look like.I just hope they run as designed.

I'm from Missouri, Show Me. Scott just about gives away 2nds that many would push onto the market, your statement is very hard to swallow. Please post a photo!
Show Me,I am not equipped to do so.Am I,therefore,a liar? And WTF are you, anyway? If these baits run true and catch fish, great! If I can't keep them in tune, I'll just take them back to where I bought them and some other lucky fishermen can buy them. I've got plenty of baits that do catch fish.I probably don't need RipShads, anyway.
If the imperfection is a dimple, and they are all in the same spot, it is a result of shrinkage at one of the pin locations, and will not effect performance at all.
Good luck and I'm betting you'll be looking for more.
Yes,ETT,dimples are a good description.Since you tell me they will not effect the performence,I will not worry about it.Thank you for responding to both of my questions.

Truth be told ,I purchased a doz. at Galyans in Woodbury on Friday.Hit the ol'Mis on Saturday and brought along 4 baits to take a look at the action. Not one out of the 4 ran true out of the box. With a little work 5-10 minutes per bait I was able to get them to run true.I heard rummor of people running them in excess of 3 mph,ill tell you I dont believe it for a second. The action does look fantastic with these baits. It has a nice tight wobble that will drive the eyes nuts. This May will be the real test.good fishing .
I'm the guy who said that Mark Brumbaugh had told me that he had run them at over 5 mph. And I admit it kinda surprised me.
And I'll stand by what Mark said because he not a BSer. He is one of the best at tuning lure that I know, and by the way he tests them EVERY time he sets them.
Not trying to be a dick here, but it was not a rumor!!! I said it, I'll take he heat if it's wrong. I've run them at up to 3.5 with no problems.
Good luck, good fishing and COME ON SPRING!!!

Went to Galyans yesterday to look at the new Rip shads, Small bait but looks like a perfect bait for my area on core in the river,
Would like to see the color patterns a scale pattern chgs for our area,

on the St. Croix River and MN.
BlueBack Chrome Prism, Floure Orange Belly
BlackBack Gold Prism, white belly or Flour Org
Dark Green Perch on Gold with Flour Org Belly similar to Taildancer Perch
this is a good color up here when rivers clearup in the spring.
Bright Flour Org/Gold Prizm/ Wht belly or Gold
Eriedecent, Prism silver over eridecent
cheap sunglass prism
Bright Chartr Back/ Silver Prism
Also that Purple Prism too.

I was speaking with Scott last week and the topic of new colors came up. At this time he has no plans to come out with anymore colors than the original twenty he has right now for the rest of the year.
This may change, but highly unlikely. Next year is a different story, we'll just have to wait and see.

What about air bubbles in the lexan bill? Some are kinda large. Should I be concerned?
I'm guessing what you are thinking are air bubbles are actually alignment sockets. If they are in the same spot they are sockets. If you have lures with air bubbles call Scott and arrange to return them. I have never seen an air bubble in a bill or anywhere in the lure.
Good luck and good fishing.
steve(IL)

No, these are off center and random. Definitely air bubbles. I'll need to open all the packages now and look at each one.
onewhoknows
02-04-2003, 11:16 PM
Air bubbles in the lips will NOT affect the action of a crankbait in any way. The molding process can be a tricky process, and sometimes trapping small air bubbles will form in the thickest part of the part. Also, the "sinks" in the body of the lure are very common, and sometimes form when the plastic cools after the shot. These usually form on the outside of the lure directly over a hook hanger boss. These are typically the thickest part of the lure, and as the plastic cools, the plastic shrinks a bit and can create a "sink" on the outside of the lure. As others have said, sinks are only an asthetic issue, not a functional one. Reef Runner produces fine quality lures, and I really do not think that these "flaws" are cause for concern or return.
whatever
02-05-2003, 09:11 AM
Sounds like your sponsered or something! Its also sounds like these baits were pushed to the market too fast!Flaws in the lip, dimples in the body, not running true out of box. They better be cheap!
Kind sir,
If you think you should be able to run lures out of the box, I hope you're in every tournament that I'm in.
It makes no diference who makes the lure, they all need to tuned to one extent or another.
Good luck and good fishing.
I expect lures to run true out of the box! And many, if not most do!
If I bought five of these baits, and 4 of them were out of tune, they would be the last I buy.
I should know better than to respond to anyone not willing to sign in. And by the way I'll put my record and my attitude up against anyone's on this or any other site. Thank you very kindly.
It is extremely rear to find a lure that will track well enough out of the box to fish. Like maybe 3 or 4 out of 100. Just because it stays down is no sign that it doesn't need tuned.
It was the pushed to market thing that ... oh well never mind.
And no I'm not sponsored by Reef Runner , he's a friend, darn near like a brother and I just don't like cheap shot artists.
Fire away boys, I will not respond further, unless you sign in.

Jim, I commend you on your composure on this issue. You are one of the most well respected contributers on this board. We all value your input as you have been there and done that. It takes a few seconds to tune a crankbait, whether it is new out of the box, or it has caught a good fish and gotten beat up in the net. It happens. If those of you that are totally dissatisfied with your Rip Shads would send them to me, I will tune them. I won't send them back to you. You will never see them again. I sell not send you any money for them. I will enjoy them to the fullest. I would love to register, but my e-mail address is too close to someone already registered. My address is:
Frank Kittrick
9328 Norwalk Road
Litchfield, Ohio 44253
PS. I am not sponsered by Reef Runner either. Scott is a good friend who takes pride in his work. The proof of that is in his "seconds", the majority of which could be sold as if there was nothing wrong with them. I personally thought he was nuts especially since he took alot of heat for slow delivery of product last year.
Frank,
Thanks for the moral support.
And you guys who take great pride in your ability to belittle and berate posters, Frank is a great example of those that you have turned off. He is one of the very best charter fishermen out of Lorain, Ohio. His experience and knowledge on Dipsys, Jets, migration patterns, equipment and electronics (really all aspects of Lake Erie walleyes and Lake Ontario Salmon), would be invaluable to this site, and he would give it freely, except for the fact that he is just plain sick and tired of being made to look bad by guest posters who know beep-bow.
This is a great site, and I decided long ago to be thick skinned, and continue to give information to any and all, although I do stay away from those topics that I feel are going to turn negative. Sometimes I wonder how much better it could be if we all had to register, and we could better control the negativism.
Sermon over...someone say amen. Good fishing and good luck.

For a long time, I have felt that ALL registered users would be an advantage as far as keeping negative or argumentative posts down. It is also clear that this may never happen since there are a good many "guest" users and the powers to be don't want to reduce the total numbers of users. So with that in mind with the exception of a few folks that for various reasons can't or chose not to register, but frequent this site enough where they are recognizable, I basically pay little attention to negative posts from a "guest" poster. I know people who have been drive away by these folks but like Jim, I have a thick skin.

Yes, I suppose I should, but it's a shame they run good guys off.
And it's no rumor, the article was in Great Lakes Angler last summer, like August or close to that.
I wish I could give you an address to pull it up but I don't think you can access the back issues. Maybe someone else knows how to do that, if it's possible.
There are some defective Dipsys floating around that have striped out tension adjustment screws. I expect you have one of those. Just remove the screw. Go to hardware store and buy a longer screw and nut. Put the new longer screw in with the nut and you're good to go. Or you may want to mess with returning it.
Trip tension for calm conditions should be around 3 pounds. as it gets rougher increase it. If it's rolling 5 to 7' waves, trip tension needs to be about 5 pounds.
Good luck and good fishing. COME ON SPRING !!!

A lot of people don't know what they are missing out on because of all the knowledgable people that have been turned away from posting helpful information because they are sick of being attacked - sometimes personally - by spineless annonomous posters.
I've had the good fortune to learn from guys like Jim & Frank that are willing to share some of their knowledge on Walleye Central by fishing with them and talking to them. If people really had a clue about the year's of experience, knowledge, and work that guys like Jim & Frank have put in to be some of the top PROFESSIONALS on Lake Erie & Ontario you would be amazed. Fishing with either of them was a big eye opener for me on all the details and effort it takes to be good. I'm just a beginner compared to these guys.
There several other guys like Frank & Jim that I know that have either stopped posting information or have never posted information on here because of jerks.
I can hardly wait to get attacked again this spring for posting reports in April about catching big fish on Erie.

Rip Lips and one other user who have ACTUALLY PURCHASED these cranks gave their personal review. ETT and others are the one's doing the ripping here!
For me, I expect a crank to run true out of the box. I'd say that to you or anyone! In fact, I believe most people here on WC are like minded! I should post a survey to see!

In my limited experience, I have found that those baits with slight wobble and minumal action appear to run well out of the box (shad raps, rap minnow baits, smithwicks, etc) but when run at higher speeds (over 1.5 gps) they may track poorly. I think a lot of folks think they are running just fine, when in fact they not tracking well and it is affecting the bite more than they know. Deeper diving baits and more active wobbling baits (reef runner products) show up the effects of poor tune more readily because of there more radical action. I vote with the camp that feels that tune is critical to all baits. It shows up more readily on some than others at low speeds, but many baits will unltimately need tuning to make them fish catchers. I am also tiring of the slams on this board by unregistered users. Maybe we should all rethink this position. There is a wealth of excellent information to be had here and a good bit of comraderie to boot.
Take care,
Rip Lips

I have to side with the Erie guys on here since I am a charter captain there.I have only met Jim once a few years ago.Being a charter captain here on Erie ,I would have to agree that he is one of the most informative guys here on WC on Lake Erie. You can read his post and take it to heart on what he says.As far as ReefRunner Products ,I will take the headache of having to tune these lures one by one in order to get them working properly.Since the RR have came out ,they have pulled more Big fish and more fish overall then any other crank that I use on Erie . I have met and and talked to Scott a couple of times and he is a top notch person.I could never see him knowingly putting out bad products for the reason of just getting them out there. And, NO I am not sponsered by RR. WOW, Can't believe that this thread has turned into a integrity thread. I was just looking for the new bait! I have picked up another 1/2 dozen and they look great. Can't wait to use them. Just curious if anyone out there notices that the Michigan Stinger loses almost all of it paint after 1 or maybe 2 fish?? Why should I pay 4 or 5 bucks for a lure that is only good for a fish or two if that? Its pretty upsetting when you are dragging a sheephead in a new spoon you just purchased to find out the paint is almost all gone when you bring it in. Another question I had was about the reef runners, these lures catch a lot of fish and yes do take A LOT of time to tune, ESPECIALLY after 1 erie walleye. There are some I rendered useless after 1 fish because the eyelet was so twisted there was no saving it.
Does anyone have any problems with the paint on these lures??
I have had at least 5 Purple Demon colored deep divers that when I brought it back in from the water it wasnt the same color I put out. Not that it changed color drastically, just that the GLOSS was gone paint looked faded?
