View Full Version : Fireline leader/tippet question?

Sometimes I use Fireline to throw jigs with certain rods/situations. I've been having problems my leaders tippet(6lb) breaking at the connection to the Fireline rather than at the jig. Re-tying tippet w/ cold fingers stinks - especially if the bite is on.

I tie a spider hitch to double up the diameter of the Fireline - then tie back-to-back uni-knots to join the tippet and Fireline.

If it's going to snag and break, I want it to break at the jig. Any suggestions on anything to do differently? I've tried XT and the invisible stuff with similar results.

Thanks for any suggestions.

It must be on a need to know. You don't need to!!!

OK, here's two suggestions, although neither may be that satisfying:

1. If your tippet's not too long, use a small swivel to attach the lines. This should at least raise the odds to 50:50 that the break will occur at the jig.

2. Instead of a 6 lb tippet, just use 6/2 Fireline on your reel without any tippet.

As I've posted several times, I've had terrible luck using a light leader connected to FL. The fireline is just to strong and unforgiving; pops any leader material you try. Unless you're in ultra-clear water, I'd go straight FL to the jig. But that's just me.-lb

Tie your jig strait to your fireline. Then you will hardly ever lose your jig.Bob J pool 12

Thanks - the question was not whether I should or knot ;-)

The question "is there a stronger way to connect tippet to Fireline?"

You would think that some smart person would come up with that. It wouldn't hurt Fireline sales either ;-) Berkeley? Somebody?

This is the only thing that's worked for me in the same situation, and even it isn't totally satisfactory. I've given up on Fireline for casting period. If the water is murky I'll tie direct to jig.

Steve,

You might try knot glue. I've never had a this problem, but I use 10 lb and up leader material.
