heres my problem,in the boat i have several soft sided tackle boxs, a few of the BPS extreme series and a few of Cabelas advanced anglers series, now these bags are touted to be water proof but they are not, ,don,t get me wrong i like them very much but i find myself constantly having to remove the tackle from inside to wipe the water out of the plastic molded bottoms cause if i don,t keep up with them the water gets into my utility boxes and i end up with some rusty jig hooks and bottom bouncer stuff or whatever i may have in the bottom utility box, cabelas has plano waterproof utility boxes with an o-ring seal around them to keep water out so do they keep the water out? or what can i expect from them? now some of the problem i can take the blame for cause i do tend to spend a lot of time on the water in the rain or snow and the tackle bags sit out in the open with me, i do zipper everything up but they still get water in them, i don,t mind having to discard a few jig heads here or there but if i have a box with cranks on the bottom that i forget to move up a few spaces it pisses me off to open the box and see a $6.00 crankbait with rusty hooks, i would think that the o-rings on these utility boxes would eliminate this- am i wrong? is this just throwing money away, i,m sure some of you guys use them so let me know what you think and do you have any other ideas on keeping some of mother nature at bay while its wet out, thanks everybody for any ideas.

I have a couple of the Cabelas waterproof boxes, and they do keep the water out. But, when it's raining there just isn't anything you can do to keep the water out, unless you never open the box. ;-)
I submerged one in the water one time to test it, and it didn't leak.

Actually, the thing that works is a rubber maid container.
I had the same problem.
Rather than getting frustrated about it - I picked up a rubbermaid container, that will hold the tackle boxes.

Although, some might think it overkill; the use of nice dry tackle is just fine.

I only put the rubbermaid in the boat- if it looks like it is going to be a soaker.

Also, another thing that I have done, is to have picked up a smaller rubbermaid box, and then just put the plano boxes that I am going to use for the day - into the rubbermaid box. With the lid on the rubbermaid; overhanging the lid; there is really no water that gets into the box.

A hassle - I agree - but I still like the soft sided best for most outings.

Take care

Shadowman,

I had some problems with rusting hooks due to condensation, so I picked up some rust inhibitor strips, and haven't had a problem since. They have an adhesive back, so I just stick them to the inside of the lid. I'm sure there are many brands, these are the ones I chose. Good luck.

Can you shoot me an e-mail of the phone number or something for this place. I am at work and it seems that site for what ever reason is blocked by our firewall.

Woodstream MFS boxes have this O-ring
Unfortunately the ones I have have bad latches on them that break off.
Got mine at ACE Hardware in S Dakota.

I store my boxes upright at all times. I stick them behind a bungi cord. This way water drains out, keeping cranks dry & rust-free.

try the silica gel packs that come with electronic equipment. A local shop saves them for me when they open display boxes for equipment.

i just got 10 of the plano boxes, i think they may be the cure i,m looking for but to be on the safe side i,m getting the rust strips also, by the way these boxes have 3 latches on them that seem pretty sturdy, theres 1 on each side and a front one and the ones i got ( the big ones ) hold twice the stuff my older ones hold.

The best luck I have had keeping cranks dry in a tackle box is with the BPS Crankbait binders. You should be able to fit quite a few in each binder (depending on crank size) and they have a handy label holder on the front. My wife has become very good at organizing crankbaits and using her excellent penmanship to label each bag, #5 Shad Raps, Reef Runner Deep Little Rippers, etc.. They don't advertise these as being waterproof but I have never noticed any water getting in them. And it sounds like I fish the same way you do, I don't get off the lake just because it is raining a little bit or even snowing alot, gotta love Gore Tex.

Oops, sorry I'm editing this because I just read your last post indicating you already ordered the utility boxes. Let us know how well they work for you too.

I don't like these boxes myself. They have a major flaw in them. If you put a wet lure in the box then the moisture can't get out. The result? if you don't keep everything dry then you end up with rust. Put a couple desicate bags (larger ones) or other moisture control devices (rust strips) in your tackleboxes and you will be fine.

Shadowman,
I also use the Cabelas Advanced Angeler boxes and when raining and I don't close the flap get water in the bottom of the box and if enough it gets into the 3700s. I thought about putting some drain holes in the base of the boxes but have not done it yet. The waterproof bottom is still useful to keep the bag from soaking up the water but I think drain holes would do more good than harm.

Your thoughts?
