I'm looking at buying a marine band radio, any suggestions on what to buy? What kind of antenna should I get? I'm thinking about getting a Raytheon 45 or 52, are these good units? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Personally I like the Standard radios. I have used them on my boats for years. Very durable. As for antennas I recommend the 8 footers (Shakespear). They allow you to get out around 15 miles (Lake Erie). They are very durable. Several of my friends have had them for years.

Both the Raytheon 45 and 52 are good units. I personally prefer the Apleco (Raytheon) 8500, as it is in an aluminum case, rather than plastic like the 45 and 52. In any case, check with Reed's on pricing. As for an antena, it's tough to beat the Shakspear Galaxy line. If you have the room, go for a 8', as VHF communications are "line of sight". Otherwise, I believe Shakspear now has a 4' in the Galaxy line. I personally use a 3' Ireland, and it works fine for me. If I was to be spending time on LOTW, any of the Great Lakes, etc, I would go with an 8'. Also, don't put a $100 antenna on a $7 mount.

I agree with Dave. I have the Apelco 8500 and a Galaxy antenna and realy like the set up. I got mine from Reed's along with a stainless antenna mount (the thing is bullet-proof).

both the Raytheon VHF's you mentioned are good radios. I agree with the others about antennas. If you have the room, go with the 8ft glass antenna from Shakespeare. On Mille Lacs you may need the extra distance you will get. Good Luck! Marty
Just put a Raytheon 52 on the boat this year, fish mainly Lake Erie, I am very satisfied with this unit. Last weekend I was talking to folks 15 or more miles away and the thing sounded great! I have mine coupled with the 8ft Shakespere ant. Hope this helps.

The RAM antenna mount is the real deal otherwise everything said is true. Buy the Shakespear 8 FT with the metal threads and bottom on the antenna. The plastic ones will crack.

I have had a Standard radio for 2 years. I had some problems with it and it was returned and serviced the first time. It was returned and replaced the second time. I was not happy that it failed twice, but I was well taken care of.
OTOH: I have a buddy running the Raytheon and after an accident, he was able to use it to call for help when it was 3' under water. An outstanding testimonial.
I also concur that an 8' antennea with metal threads and mounts are your best bet.

I too have the 8' Shakespear antenna. Just be aware that there is a huge difference in antenna quality. Basically you get what you pay for. My radio came with a free 8' antenna, which in the catalog sold for $30. I had terrible range, hardly any. I bought a $100 antenna and now my range is great. Spend a little extra to get a good antenna and you won't be sorry.
