Not Sure

I've been contemplating a new GPS to replace my Lowrance 310 for a little while now. I've considered the old 1600, the reaplcement I think its a 2400 or something like that, the Global Map 3000, and the X15 with GPS.
What is the difference in all these. I see the 2400 comes with or without the mappign CD and software which is similar to the 1600. How good is that background map,or how good is that CD.
The Global Map 3000 also comes with a background map, do you also need to buy the CD, or what does that use for mapping? What about the X15, does that have a background map and or a cd? Any help would be appreciated?
A good, compitant sales person should be able to answer all of these questions for you and more. Some of the answers to your questions can only be answered by yourself, depending where and how you want to fish and how much you want to spend. Good luck in your search.

Go to the lowrance.com page. You can do side by side comparisons and get all the info you can imagine.

I bought a Lowrance 3000 MT this past year and it is awesome. It comes with all the background maps you need to operate the unit. The great thing about this unit is that Fishing Hot Spots has teamed with Navionics maps and they make what are called Hot Maps. The Hot Map is basically the Hot Spots maps loaded on to the MMC card that your GPS can read from. Yes you guessed it the Hot Spots maps that you like so much now appear on your GPS screen. The contour lines, bar markings, weedlines, etc. it is all there. I have at least 6 of these for my favorite lakes and I will be buying more. They make them for all the major waterways including LOTW. With the depth contours on the GPS you can always know where you are on the break lines or bars. As you probably Lowrance is changing there line totally to upgrade to more recent technology. Do not buy the Globalmap 1600 as they do not accept MMC cards and can not be used with the Hot Maps. This is a great fishing tool. The 3000 is a pretty good unit, but if you have the bucks stashed away go right for the Raytheon GPS. They will run you around $1500, but they are alot more accurate for positioning than the 3000, but are almost three times the price.
Check out navionics.com and fishingmaps.com for some more info on the Hot Maps.
Hope this helps.

Most of the units you are asking about (3000, X15, 2400) have the capability to access MMC (Multi-Media Cards). Each unit comes with a "default card" (might be optional on the 2400) that contains the background maps in them. These have fairly good maps showing the shoreline of most bodies of water in the US and Canada. The CD you can get with the unit has detailed mapping. For this you will have to attach an MMC writer to your computers serial port, then choose the area you want to get detailed maps for (easy to use Create a Map software), and download it to a MMC card (probably not the "default card", but a blank one you can purchase). Now, if you want to have detailed mapping in your unit for that area, simply put the new MMC card in the unit and the detailed mapping will show up. Detailed mapping still just shows shorelines, but you can zoom in further and they are very precise.
The Navionic and Hot Maps come on a seperate MMC card from the companies (or I believe you can download them for a price onto you computer and then write your own MMC card). You put them in your unit and now you get detailed shoreline mapping and contour lines.
Other units that this works for are the X16, X15 color and the 240 (GPS and sonar).
