Sorry if this has been beaten to death already. I want to get started using lead core line this upcoming season and need some advise. 1) What is the best rod and reel combo? Length, model etc.. 2) What is the best line to use? Any help would be great, I want to improve the crank bait portion of my game!!

Buy a Penn 205 or larger reel and a $20 downrigger rod. The downrigger rods are usually pretty whippy and that will absorb a lot of the shock and lead has no stretch. I think 13 or 16 lb test (can't remember which) is all you need.

18 pound test line contains the most lead per diameter of line so that is the most efficient line to go with.

18 lb. that's what I meant. I always just call Neal on stuff like that. He's the tackle king junkie of Aurora. LOL

I use a daiwa line counter but the line counter is not needed. A large capacity level wind reel will do. The rods you will want are the same you would use for trolling fireline. I like the Berkley Gary Roach Lightining Rods made for trolling/planer board applications. 7'to 10' are prefered. Everyone I know of uses the 18' test of leadcore.

There are some real good post on this same subject. Strictly Fishing, last post Feb. 8- 03 1:39 PM. Not quite in the archives but page 7-8. Hope this helps. Swede
