Even though I will be a half century old soon, I am a virgin walleye fisher. When, where, and what, should I use for my first outing. I will be fishing a hilltop impoundment in Southern Indiana for stocked walleye. Most of the lake is still frozen, but the forcast is for upper 40's next week. Should be open by the first of March. Thanks

Try starting with JIG's,twister tails/fuzzy grubs 6-8 # test 1/4 oz.
any color is good as long as it is chartuse/green.thats a start.

First, find out when the lake usually starts spawning. Fish should be close to where they are going to spawn. Find rocks in about 4-12 ft deep and back off to nearby related structure. Cranks will work to. Troll the area to identify holding spots. When you find 'em move to your jigs. Have you jigged much?

Make sure to talk to the local bait shops and locals and see what they say. Please be specific on the lake. Someone that reads here may have fished it and are fishing it, and can probably help you more. We've got the area which does help.

In addition, if you don't already have new Walleye 2003 Guide magazine, Walleye Insider, other walleye magazines, or a book about walleye, please consider to get one. It helps to get some ideas about tactics and making a solid plan. Makes it much funner when start landing them.

Good luck,

i agree with wallydog start with a jig and minnow and fish slow, as far as location on one of the lakes i fish right after ice out or even still ice in places i get all my fish in the deepest water, now on this lake deep is 17 to 19 ft, now a few weeks after that yes go shallow.

My two cents
I agree with the post but I do not agree with a 1/4 oz jig I would go with a 1/16 or 1/8 only because water is cold and fish are very sluggish.and when the water temps start to go up then you can work your jig faster and that is when you should start using a little bigger jig.20 years of jig fishing and it has worked for me and my line of choice is Power-Pro 1lb diamater 6lb test whenfish are sluggish. And 2lb diamater 10lb test when fish start getting very active.

AS far as jig weight's ,you will need a variety and that depend's on the condition's your fishing.as far as line diameter I have caught
10# fish on 8# test.as far as fish being sluggish right after ice out.they start trolling in lake erie before ice berg's melt away.saying that everyone that post's to give there Idea's that's
fantastic!!.bottom line start with basic's keep trying method's till
you connect.you know when you connect.
