What size line for Handlining leaders?

I was wondering what size line to use for handlining leaders and why. Thanks.

I use 25# for most of my handline fishing for a couple of reasons, 1 it's not that smart it won't tie itself into knots as you bring in a fish and lay it on the floor. 2 I think the bite is a reaction bite to the lure, and it's not uncommon where I fish to tie into a good sized muskie.. I have used lighter test, 20# while fishing shallow water and clear water at the same time.

No less than 20#, or you will be spending more time untangling line than you will fishing.

I would add I like an extra limp line for the same reasons as above.

I also look for an abrasion resistant line.

mason's 25-30# works for me !

I and most of my handlining buddies use 25# or 30# Mason Leader Material. The stiffness of it allows it to coil up nicely on the floor and not tangle up. I have used other brands and still prefer Mason's.

I also use Mason Hard Type leader material #20 lb test.
This is the one time you want a line with a lot of memory to coli nicely on the bottom of the boat.

I use 20 and 40 foot leads.
15 and 30 footers also work well.

20 to 25 lb test, but it's not in the line size, It's in the position of the boat.
