I would suggest any of the following from St. Croix:

AS68MXF Avid Spinning 6 - 12 3/16 - 5/8 3.95 $ 150
AS70MLF Avid Spinning 4 - 10 1/8 - 3/8 3.95 $ 160

They are 10% off at boat shows and you'll get a nice hat to boot. The 6'8" is extra fast and a slightly heavier action wise, depends on what you like or how you'll use them.

Todd (not on their pro staff, just can't beat 'em for the money in my opinion)
Yup, got her... feel that head shake!

If your budget is for rod AND reel, I would suggest the following:

1. St. Croix Premier or Berkley Series One, in 6'6" or 7' M or ML, depending on preference;

2. Shimano Symetre (2000).

The Shimano Stradic is a great reel, but even the sale price of last year's models (around $90, I understand), will put you over your budget. Or, if you want the better reel, go with a Berkley Lightning Rod (Signature Series), which should save you at least $20 from the St. Croix or Series One. You might also look at the Rapala rods - the mid-range ones are in the $50 range, I think, and seem pretty good for their money, although I have never used one.

If it were my money, and that's a hard and fast budget, I'd go with the ML 1 pc. 7' St. Croix and the Symetre.

Good Luck.

6.6 berkley lighting rod light to med action with a 2000 series shimano symetre, you will enjoy this combo and it will be under the budget you mentioned, DO NOT let the price of the lighting rod fool you, as far as i,m concerned they could add 30 bucks to the rod and its still a bargin.

Another Rod that I think is reallllly nice for the money is the Fenwick Venture you can find at WalMart. I broke a rod and needed a replacement quick last year and bought 7' rod. I'd have to say it seems worth a lot more money than the $49 or so I paid for it. Definitely worth checking out.

For rigging, I like the St Croix “PS76MLF 7'6" ML Fast" These are $90 bucks and also double as an excellent slip bobber rod.

You can save yourself a fair amount of money, over buying a separate rod and reel, by buying a combo package through Cabela’s or BPS.

I’d suggest you visit both sites and take a good look at what they have to offer, in their respective rod and reel combos. Here are just two examples that could work and are at either end of your budget.

I mostly use the St Croix now but let my wife use my old Berkley Lightening Rod (casting for northern in Canada). That rod really is great for the money. I have one that is 6'6" and ML I belive. It is a bit 'soft' but forgiving for my wife to use. I also have 4 Lightening Rods I use for perch fishing. 5'6" light action. Great 'lite' rods for pan fish. I can 'see' the fish playing with my bait at 20' below. I just sit the rods over the gunwale and on a cooler and sip my beverage. I catch more fish than the 'old timers' with their 8-9' rods.

For the money, I don't think you can go wrong with the Cabelas XML or Walleye series rods. I think you can combo those for around the $150 range.
