Has anyone heard, or read any reports of what the affect of Walleye eating Goby has done, or is doing, to the food quality of the Walleye???

I know that some time ago the Walleyes were found to be forging on the Gobys' at an increasing rate and I haven't seen or heard of what was happening with them (Walleyes) since. The fear was that - the Gobys' eat the zibra mussels that filter the water of all manner of solids/wastes and the Walleye eat a smorgesboard of concentrated pollutants contained in the Goby.

As I understand it, the species most affected from bioaccumulation of toxins is the smallies. walleye don't eat as many gobies and are a leaner fish. Most toxins are fat soluble and therefore are stored in fatty tissue. The belly meat of a fish has the most fat and it may be a good idea to discard this (at least on smallies) if you are worried about it.

LAST EDITED ON May-12-00 AT 02:17PM (CST)[p]Thanks cmb. In all honesty, I'm really not that worried about it but I was really curious. These "reports" were flying every where 3-4 years ago and I haven't heard diddle since. It just seems like there was another "person" with TOO much time on their hands and TOO much money finding ways to put the screws to our sport again.

By the way - when I fillet, I ALWAYS remove the belly meat - no matter where it was caught - doesn't taste good!!

Thanks, again.
