If you were going to fish crawler harnesses do you backtroll slowly. Do multiple hooks get in the way or does it catch the short strikers.I can't wait I really need to catch some fish and I will start having alot of time halfway thru April.

You can back troll harness's and in windy conditions that is the best way. If you plan to troll slowly make sure that you are using a harness that floats such as a Wally Pop or Cha Cha, to keep your presentation off the bottom and out of the snags.

you can fish harnesses with any method that keeps the boat moving.....using keel weights, snap weights, bottom bouncers,3 way's, pa's, behind spoon flashers (dodgers) plus many more applications. however you keep the boat moving, trolling, drifting etc. you can use 1,2 or 3 hooks, i use a treble hook as my second hook when not in snaggy areas.
hope that helps

I use a two hook crawler harness. I have better luck hooking fish with the two hook rig. I make all my walleye rigs myself. I like to have the hooks spread apart a little farther then the spinners they sell at the baitshops and stores.

You can go slow or fast. In the summer I will go about 1mph to 1.5 mph trolling spinners with crawlers. The walleyes will hit that crawler hard.

I bottom bounce almost exclusively for walleyes. I have just had so much success doing it, that I use it TOO much now.

I make my own harnesses. I use a #4 hook, short shank, 3 to a snell (placed about 3 inches apart). If I want to change it to a 2-hook snell, I just cut off the rig after the 2nd hook. Works well.

I ALWAYS forward troll. I have a 24-volt bow-mounted trolling motor and it just works better for me than back trolling, which I did try for a while.

Habjo.
You can succesfully use harnesses virtually any way that keeps the blades pulsating. We have even casted and slow retrieved them on the Tittabawassee with some good results. Using two hooks versus three helps prevent a lot of snags in brush and rock filled rivers, wheras a two single hook version with a treble as the third takes lots of open water snap weight rig walleyes. The skies the limit with harnesses and your only limited by the lac of experience.

I use harnesses on Erie alot. Try the Berkley power baits they work great a lot less mess in the boat than useing crawlers and cheaper to use than crawlers, neon red is a hot color. I use the 6" power worm but always take a little meat just in case. I also use the two hook harness as described in the previous post good luck and good fishing ....Jimmy

If your getting a lot of snags, dropping down to one hook will often help. Using just one hook isn't a bad thing if your sorting through a lot of small fish or the fish are all coming on the front hook anyway.

Good Luck,
