I had the opportunity to fish with a fine gentleman and a top notch pro, the “chairman or the board” Bruce Deshano. I thought I could put Bruce on walleyes on the Columbia River but I was humbled by the river once again. Alas, no walleyes. It just drives home the point that I can’t catch fish! I apologized to Bruce and am ashamed to leave him the impression that there are no walleyes in the river.

On the flip side Bruce was fabulous to fish with. It is always fun to fish with someone who is a true pro at walleye fishing. Thanks again Bruce for great trip and showing me how to handline! Come back in the fall and we’ll catch some dandies!

Dan

Out in Oregon Land where the walleyes grow bigger and nobody can catch them, at least I can’t!

dan, you are so right. bruce is an asset to our fishing world.
and you can bet that he WILL be back to show that handlining the columbia can dominate.
maybe i'll invite myself along...hint...bruce?
by then, my 'new partner' should have me handlin' pretty good...i hope!

Hey Dan,
Bruce sent me a picture of the sturgeon this morning. By the looks of that great big smile on his face, I would have to think he was having a great time also...;-)

Boy, that sure is some beautiful country out there....where was that picture taken exactly?

Glad you two had a good time!

Way to go Dan...I think we fooled another one! LOL! Seriously though, that is the way fishing goes, ya think you got it figured out until you try to invite someone new along then it doesn't work. Glad to hear you guys caught something. Any pics of that pre-historic creature?

Bruce has spent more than enough time on the water to understand that sometimes things just do go the way you'd like. I'm sure this won't deter him from coming back out west in the future.

bruce is a great guy!
.....just because you take anyone out, your showing them your knowledge of the river/lake system and spots that work for you. that's the main thing. your saving them time and informing them with knowledge that they can put to use on that system. there are plenty of spots that are great for me, but not others, and lots of spots that are great for others and i can't catch a fish there....(still never fiqured that out quite yet). catching fish is a confidence builder, but not always the main thing when out prefishing. marking good fish structure is better than having to rely on just a map, and with the detail info you give about that structure it's an advantage that can only help.
bruce knows the detroit river. when we ran it together i believe he came out of the day knowing something more than when he started (i learned a couple things too). and hopfully a friendship started that will last a life time. that's what i get out of taking people out, catching fish is just a bonus.

You want humble. Lake Erie, this last fall. Limited once with my fishing buddy. The rest the time, it was 12 hours of fishing for 3 fish. The magic number. 4 hours per fish. You name it, we tried it. March through August, we limited vertually every time we went out. The bad news, it was all catch and release because we figured we would go fall fishing and pier fishing at Huron. Not one fish at Huron. I have never seen that much bait fish. Everywhere. This year could be a hard bite because of all the bait fish. Yes, Bruce Deshano is a class person. I have never fished with him or meet him, but have exchanged correspondence with him. He has a world class product line that has advanced the sport of fishing. A good representative of the industry.

The Mighty Columbia can be a tough on any giving day, The best thing about the Columbia as Juls has stated, It has some of the most beautiful scenery that you'll ever find.

I hope that some day all the big time Pro's (PWT,RCL) may come out this way and give the Columbia a try. Id like to see some of the guys and gals give their best try at the systems out here. But, Its so far to travel for most, I doubt we will ever see it.

To all of you in the Portland area, I am at the fishing expo starting tomorrow. Booth 286. Stop by and tell me somemore stories about the Columbia River Walleye. I know they are there, we looked hard and had a great time. Dan took me to some of his favorite spots but nothing there at this time. I hope to find another time to come up here again and for more time. This is a beautiful place to fish and the water is huge.

This was an awsome fishing expierence for me and the sturgeon and squawfish were all firsts for me. I will get a walleye another day. They will only be getting bigger waiting for my return.

THANKS DAN FOR MAKING MY VISIT TO YOUR STATE!
