What is the real issue about using line that is of a heavier diameter?

Is the thoeory that the Walleye can see it in clear water (stained water doesn;t seem to make a difference, i.e. leadcore)? Is it the dive curve? Is it something else?

I've noticed the differnece in diameter between 10 and 20 pound is not huge on the dive curve (not as huge as I expected), although it could make a difference on some shallow stuff.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Don't know if this is how everyone sees it, but I go as small a diameter as will meet conditions (snags, rocks, size of lures, size of fish, etc.) with the idea that lures will dive deeper and be less visible to the fish and often will get better lure action. Generally, it has nothing to do with amount of line on the reel. I've never been spooled yet, at least not in fresh water. I did hook something a couple of years ago tuna fishing that took off for China and never stopped.

lol

That was my thinking. I know diameter can affect action, but the diff between 10 and 12 may not be much and the added strength trolling the shallows right now may be welcomed.
