I have used 10lb. trilene xt on the whole spool for years. Does anyone back the reel with anything then the mono or just mono on the whole spool. Wondering if line counter knows difference between fully backed spool compared to thinner only mono spool?

Your linecounter reels need to be full to be accurate. If you should run a less than full spool, it will run much shorter actual line out than what the linecounter tells you it should be.
If I were spooling mono I'd fill it full up to make sure it's as accurate as it can be. If you're spooling fireline or something similar, use a mono backing to fill the spool.
