Trying to decide which mount style(flush or side)of rod holder to use a foot or so ahead of the counsel on my Ranger 681VS. I currently use two on the rails and have the in a cleat style up front but need a couple in between. Personally I'd like to use the flush mounts but don't know if I can get myself to drill that big of hole in my fiberglass. Has anyone done this and what suggestions do you have for doing this? Thanks.

Come on, someone has to have a suggestion.
Gibby,
I used to own a 681 (older model), and the Fish-On rod holders were side mounted up front. There are, however, certain positions for placement better than others.
When a rod is in the holder during trolling situations, usually with planer boards, the holder is positioned with the rod pointed UP, to minimize line drag and is less prone to crossing lines of other boards. This means the butt end of the rod is almost touching the carpet, and sometimes over a storage compartment. Experiment with a rod in the holder's UP position, and place it at the least obtrusive location, while still allowing for the maximum "spread" of your rods. If the butt end of the rod interferes with a compartment you frequent quite often, consider another location if available. If not, a temporary lifting of the rod, or flattening of the rod holder will allow access. If you flat-line troll more often, placement is less of an issue.
Also, I never had a side mount tear from the fiberglass.
Hope this helps,
JB

i have mine on the side, that way you are not going to trip or hit anything getting in and out of the boat. the only thing i have on the top rail is my cannon downrigger mounts, towards the back. the rod holders are removable anyway and the mounting bracketts are small. either way ok.
