View Full Version : How many fishing rods do you have?
I have one rod (7' St. Croix Legend Elite MLF) that I use for fishing walleyes and panfishs. Since I use this rod for everything, is there any reason to get another rod? I know guys that have a dozen rods.
Thanks, Turk!

Just counted yesterday, as I was putting a new reel on an old rod....36 now. Do I need that many? You bet your last crankbait!!! Why, because they're there.....:7

I'm in that 35 to 40 rod area. All in working order. Have a dozen that are dinged/busted/worn out in the garage rafters.
When you fish waters that allow two lines, you tend to buy everything in pairs.

I have about 2 dozen and counting (upgrade freak I guess).
I find myself actually USING about 8 of them with any regularity throught the softwater season (but don't tell the old lady).
Nice not to have to re-tie all the time, and use different lengths/actions/lines for different species/presentations.

I have 27 outfits rigged and ready. These include spinning rods, casting rods, trolling rods, musky rods, etc for a variety of applications. Probably another 8 for ice fishing.
Too many? I think not :)

When I moved three years ago, I got rid of 30-35 rods and kept the main 8 that I used. I am now back up to around 25. Oh yeah, 5 ice rods I forgot to count too.

I've got around 30 myself. As much as I try to make them serve double duty, it takes a lot of rods to cover, walleye jigging, dipsey divers, stream steelhead, downriggers, whipping (dropback fishing in the St. Clair R. with 3 oz. of lead on a 3-way), plastic wormin' for bass, flyrodding for gills, etc.
I'll give you credit, Turk, for only having one rod, you've got a good one.
Not nearly as many rods as pairs of shoes the wife owns!!!!

every time i hit a tourney i take 4 trolling rods with line counters, 2 ml jigging rods, 2 mh jigging rods (with extra spools of diff size line) a slip bobber rod, and at least 1 dead stick rod. the conditions change so quickly out there you can't limit yourself to 1 rod. i would be a big mistake!

The inventory list as of todays date somewhere between 30-35,in my mind I try to keep it down to around 16 but ;) it just doesn't happen? Gave three away last year and have some garage "debris" that eventually get's handed out also but even those seem to accumalate?
My favorite ice rods is the better half of of the first rod I bought with paper route money. Gotta love that old Shakespeare, eyelets are wrapped with tip up nylon, it has a flyrod tip, wrapped balsa handle and a electrical tape "helping" one of the wraps.

Not nearly enough:)
I only have 7 rods of my own for soft water which has been plenty for every tourney I've been in.....but if I count My wife and kids rods I have 21. I also have 9 ice rods + 6 tip ups.
Doesn't matter how many I have, I'm always daydreaming about one better or more. Just like the boats, lures, flashers, etc.....

I'm starting to feel more like a normal person with each response to this question.
Anyway, I have 6 spinning rods/reels. I use 4 on a regular basis, and have 2 extras for my friends to use, and I also keep 2 closed face reels on hand with short rods for children I take out.
The breakdown:
1 tall, meduim, with heavy line (fireline) for casting/trolling cranks.
1 medium for jigging walleyes, 6 lb test.
1 medium light for crappies, 4 lb test.
1 medium rigged for slip bobbers, 6 or 8 lb test.
1 slip bobber setup for friends.
1 casting setup for friends.
Plus 3 ice fishing rod/reels, two tipups.
When I fish alone, I bring 3-4 rods.
Great question, very funny.

5 casting, 2 spinning, 3 trolling. I have 1 favorite a Fenwick. Will buy nothing but Fenwicks from now on. Since using them my success on light hitting fish has improved by leaps, and bounds.
I don't know how many I own, 20-25 probably, but I carry about 13 with me in my boat, and when I hit a tourney I slim that down to 8 -- 2 linecounters, 2 rigging rods, 1 heavy bouncer rod, 1 good jigging rod, and 2 slip-bobber rods. More than that is just stuff to get in the way, and that's all that I need for myself, partner brings his own.

You know guys that own a dozen rods? Your question intrigued me enough to do an inventory. Counted 52 rod and reel combo's and 9 ice combo's. Looks like I need to do some shopping this spring. Need to add a couple more must haves in the new Cabela's catalog. It may be a sickness but it sure is alot of fun!!!!

OK here goes
8 Dipsy rods, Diawa 47/Okuma
6 board rods, Diawa 27
2 downrigger rods.Penn 320
2 wire line rods Penn 209
3 spinning rods for wt forward rigs, casting cranks, etc. Shimanos
2 perch rods, Abu Garcia
2 bottom bouncer rods, Penn 10
1 noodle rod for steelhead, Quantum
2 ultra lite spinning rods for panfish, Shakespears
1 telescoping spinning pack rod, shakespear
29 so far. not all the dipsy or board rods match so my goal is to get all the same brand/action/length this yr for those trolling presentations
Man, what a question, that can get us all in trouble.
musky rods for casting=12 and 8 for trolling=20 ready to go.
for walleye casting 18 ,trolling 12 thats another= 30
for crappie, bass, and panfish another 15 thats 45
fly rods 6, so thats 51 so far
the ice rods depending on the type of fish, there are 24 that makes 75 and then there are some that have for the grandkids, but they dont count. my wife has 11 different rods and reels too, man thats way too many. there are also a lot of antique rods and reels that are there. all of the musky and walleye, bass, and crappie rods are ready to go for the spring, no wonder i thought i would never get them all ready. good luck and good fishin to all.

Great question. I have 6 rods that I use regularly, 3 casting 3 spinning. I have 2 rods to loan to friends, both spinning. I have 6 rods I almost never use but have sentimental value. The for the hard water I have 7 rods/reels and one tip up. I used to have more but have narrowed it to the 6 I use most:
1- 6'10" muskie casting
1 - 7' muskie casting
1 - 7'6" bobber/live bait spinning
1 - 7' crankbait/trolling casting
1 - 6' jigging spinning
1 - 6' light jigging,panfish spinning
I hope I can keep it close to this for a while.

I've got 13 rigged and ready that cover everything from trolling down to live bait fishing with slip bobbers. Also have 5 or 6 "extras" that I can switch reels onto when I want to have exact same set-ups on multiple rods when I'm zeroed in on a presentation or method. This very seldom happens for me so I like to be flexible in what I bring to cover most options. Usually bring just two trolling rods with linecounters, One baitcasting rig for spoon jigging/bottom bouncing, and One or Two spinning set-ups for livebait rigs and pitching jigs. Most of the time I limit myself to 4 rods so we aren't tripping all over them in my partners boat. He's only got one rod locker and it's jammed with all his rods for every application.

I have about 20 rods. Of those I use 10 of them on a regular basis. There is pike, walleyes, largemouths, smallmouth, panfish and musky. That calls for alot of different rods.

Wow! Some of you guys have more rods than a small sporting goods store! I guess I'll have to log in as a lightweight.
2 jigging rods - spinning
2 rigging rods - spinning
2 crankbait rods - spinning
2 linecounters - baitcasting
2 medium Northern rods - baitcasting
2 heavy Musky rods - baitcasting
Even so, there's a lot of money involved. My baitcasting rods are medium priced, but my spinning rods are top of the line St. Croix and GLoomis.

Yep I know I don't have enough because I have been trying to outfit 2 growing boys so I try to have 3 of every different kind and most pull double duty for bouncing ,rigging and slip bobbers.
I still only have about 20 rods for soft water and 12 for ice fishing with 2 ice sticks and 4 tip ups also.
Been trying to get at least 2 line counters with trolling rods for pulling boards. That will probably only be a start because I really have started to dig trolling.

I now have about 170 rods-reels, that I use, for the different fish species.I have taken a 4x8 peice of 1/2 inch lattace, cut it into 2x4 foot peices, and hung them above my 619 in the garage, 4 feet apart in line with each other.I put the poles in the lattace holes 2 to each hole, reel ends opposite each other. I hang them by order, Musky poles by each other, trolling rods, walleye rods, pan fish, bass casting, so forth. The lattace will hold about 80 rods, for each two 2x4 foot section. When I go fishing, I just stand in the boat, and pick the poles I need for that species of fish I'M going for that day, and theres 4 sectoins above the boat so all the poles are there. No one can mess with them unless they climb in the boat, and if the boats not there you need a step ladder to reach them.I just thought I would give you a idea to hang your rods thats out of the way and handy to...redrnger...feel the tug.

Spurdog, a special rod for bobber fishing is usually long and fast to medium tip for getting the slack out fast and strong backbone for good hooksets and being able to lob a live bait rig a good distance without losing your bait. I like 7 to 7.5 fot rods and I double duty them for longlining cranks when I am allowed 2 rods per person. My son also likes his bobber rod for rigging live bait if we are using long snells. I like to use bobbers that remove without retying because of using them for double duty.
Hope this helps.

I always thought that I was on the heavy side, but now I realize I am an extreme lightweight when it comes to rods. I presently have 8 rigged and ready to go for most of my fishing uses. I have 8 more in the garage just in case and my boys have about 8 additional less expensive combos that I keep at the in-laws lake place for the dock. WOW, LOOKS LIKE I BETTER SHOW THIS TO MY WIFE SO SHE CAN SEE WHY I NEED ANOTHER LOOMIS! I did get rid of about 6-7 combos that I didn't use any more at a garage sale.

Is this my wife in disguise? Honey, how many times do I have to explain this to you...it's like golf, you would never play a round with just one or two clubs! You don't need to go counting those rods in the basement, they're just "back-ups"!:-) Good post, but I never count my rods and reels because then I never have to lie when I get interrogated about "how many fishin rods do you really have and do you need them all?"

I never kept track but my wife "frequently" reminds me it's over 25. I'll bet she will remind me again soon.

Hey Turk,
Only a dozen? Jeez I have about 20, and with some of my friends I feel like I am way behind!!
Seriously though, the number of rods a guy or gal has depends on how the chase fish. And in some cases level of insanity......sorry, I am trying to be serious.
But that being said I have several of my rods that pull double and triple duty, and some that are used for one thing. But I fish for anything that's biting from panfish to Salmon and Carp. I feel several rods allow a much more diverse and select presentation techniques.
Have fun............R
I would guess around 20 or 30. Plus around 10 ice rods. Counting your rods is like counting your money during a poker game, it may bring you bad luck. I won't count ! I need all the luck I can get !

We have a guy here in the Twin Cities who writes a newspaper column and has a radio show, named Joe Soucheray. He has this deal on how to measure self worth called the Cylinder Index. The total number of all of your cylinders in all of the cars, lawn mowers, boats etc…. You are doing good if your “CI” is equal to or greater than your age.
This thread is a virtual “RI” or Rod Index. I think anyone who has an "RI" equal to or greater than thier age is doing OK!
I need 2 more rods…..

You can never have enough fishing stuff! Last count... 121. Where I live, we have just about every kind of fish that swims, so yes... I use them all. I am also a guide, so I have the guide rods, and MY rods. Not that I don't like to let my clients use my stuff, but some of them do have a tendency of stepping on things, and a Lommis IMX would not do well under a size 12 boot. Don't feel bad man, I have 4, of which I only use two regularly.
I would have more if I could afford them though, but definately not more than 15/20, that's just getting on the silly side.
My wife already thinks every time I'm at this site I'm angling for a new motor for the new boat I just bought last fall. Please do not ever suggest one of anything (except your wife!) is enough, and thank goodness for all the responses so I can show her my meager collection of rods (12) is far from complete. Have never built a spinning or casting rod, but my favorite rods were always two fly rods that I built from scratch - very satisfying, and not nearly as difficult as I thought it would be. This was many years ago, and some advice for the kids out there - if you do build a nice one, don't give it to your girlfriend as a present, inevitably you will lose it forever, for she will always know how much more it and fishing meant to you and will, out of just plain spite, keep it even if you are no longer considered essential gear. Then again, this will be a source of great amusement to your friends and provide years of laughs at your expense. By the way, not to plug or start another survey, but I did opt for a couple of St. Croix spinning rods, both one piece, one UL, one ML, and what a great and noticeable difference over some of the other rods I have, although I have an old Skyline I bought in college in 1983, that I would never part with (she just got to borrow that one). I will cut this short - I need to go look at my Spring catalogs for another depth finder, some more rods, and more of anything else I'll probably get gigged on this year!
