I teach computers but only when the fish aren't biting. I would like to develop a program that tracks fish catch data. The theory is to develop a program that you can reference later on to help you catch more fish. What I have seen on the web so far is OK but I would like to customize it with the input from real fisherman.

I have been an avid fisherman since I was able to crawl, so has my father, and my grandfather. I have a decent start on the software but what I would like from you all is to send me ideas as to what factors you make note of when you catch a fish (walleye, bass, whatever.) Do you track barometric pressure? How about lure size, weight, trolling speed, weather conditions, etc. etc. Please send me a quick note regarding some of the conditions you would like to see in this program I am working on. This isn't a money making venture for me. I'll probably send it out for free. I just get hooked on these things and follow them to completion.

Thanks in advance,

I would be interested in barometric pressure, moon phase, water clarity, general weather condition(sunny, windy, cloudy)and maybe time of day.

Are you going to make this software available to your Walleye Central brothers and sisters free of charge?

I am currently designing a software that does about the same things you are talking about. I am using VB for the "Face" of the software with ties back into Access for the database. I will be able to enter locations and look at the dates that I have fished, the conditions, results, etc. The hardest part of all of this is going to be entering all of the data after I go!!! I will let you know when I get it done. What are you using to develop this program?

Maybe we can compare notes since neither of us is trying to make a million on this!

Things I would include:

Body of water, what city/town, which ramp.
Date & Time of day/night.

General weather Conditions (sunny, rain, temp)
Wind (direction, MPH)
Water conditions (Wave height, clear, murky, strong current)
Water Temp.

Species fishing for
Fishing location (name of reef or point, GPS locations)
What was the spot on the spot?
Presentation (jig, trolling, rigging, bobber)
Hot bait.
How may did I catch, what size?
Overall fishing conditions (tough bite, jumping in the boat)

Ryan,

I'm not sure as to how I am going to create it. I just started thinking about it today. I am leaning toward making it web based using some asp forms linked to a database. I am still figuring that one out though. I'll let you know more as I develop it. You're right about entering all the data. I was thinking of developing a Palm application that would sync up with a database. That way you could just take your palm out on the water and directly enter the data as you reel the fish in.

If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles.

Once it gets developed I am sure that I will need some willing participants to test it and help me work some bugs out of the program. If I don't give it away for free it will probably be a very small price to cover S & H of the disk.
