I'm new to tip-up fishing, but would like to give it a go.

Do the 10" Frabil's have lights you can add for night fishing?

I'm thinking 8 or 10lb for main line, swivel, then 6lb Fluorocarbon leader.

How's that sound?

Thanks

Get the plastic coated tip up line so you can see it on the ice. It is more durable. It shouldn't spook the fish if you use a leader.

The round Frabils are a great choice for tipups. I use an add-on light made by HT that is a small red tube with a mercury-free tilt switch. It has a 3V Li battery that plugs into the end. It makes for a great light and it can fit in the little storage box in the tipup. For line, I use the braided dacron style about 30# with a snap swivel on the end. Now for leaders, I have some 6# and 12# Vanish that is left over from a (failed) experiment with spinning reels. I precut my leaders to 6' with a #10 treble and put several on a card that is stored in the tipup compartment. I keep a few wire leaders and bigger trebles for pike fishing also. I keep a few of the micro bobbers for line markers in the compartment too. I hope that this answers your questions.

You could use a florocarbon leader, buy why bother.
In cold weather the florocarbon gets quite stiff and kinky. I realize that it is only a leader, but why not simply use a piece of clear or green mono. Much less kinky, and won't spook the fish either.

Take care

We have always used Spiderwire for line on all of our tip-ups. Of course we mainly use them for pike, but when we do set them up for walleyes, we put a mono or fluorocarbon leader on them.

Goose you guys must cut your fingers good on some screamin slimmers.I would recommend 50# black dacron the thicker line is easier to see and handle put on a barrel swivel and a leader of your choice.
