I currently have an older Hummingbird graph in my 16' Sylvan Profishermen and just purchased a Lowrance x71 and can't decide where to mount them. The Hummingbird is mounted on the drivers counsel and it seems to work o.k. My first thought was to Put the new Lowrance on the counsel and mount the old hummingbird up front by the bow mount trolling motor. Is this my best option? Should I mount the skimmer transducer from the front graph on the back of the boat or should I mount it on the trolling motor itself? I currently have a 40lb. thrust autopilot.
In my humble opinion, If you spend the majority of your time fishing in the bow, I would put your best unit there. A humminbird is a fair unit at best, but should at least be able to give you depth ranges, and contours for finding the fishing spot you need.
On the other hand, most humminbirds (that I know of at least) do not have a scroll speed change, thus limiting your depth reading at any given moment under mid to high range cruising speeds.
If the lakes you fish, you know like the back of your hand (so as to not hit any underwater obstructions etc) I would use your best unit for fishing purposes.

Buy another transcducer and power cord. Install one on the transom and one on the trolling motor. Buy 2 ram mounts and mount one up front and one right next to the hummingbird on the counsel. Then you can use it in either place.

I found that what works for me is mounting my 2 VEXILAR units side by side on a RAM electronics mount on the dash. The RAM system has all the flexibility I need for the whole center and rear of the rig, easy viewing.
I can pop the Vexilar FL-18 off the RAM with the new quick release mount and move it to the front in 20 seconds, if I so wish, or back again to the dash area. This just requires a hot Leeds and a base for the bow and for those that cover there rigs while on the road it makes things fast and handy to tarp up, less stuff in the way.
